Rocca Imperiale offers several themes to consider when planning your trip: the history of Castello Svevo, the lanes of the historic centre, the Santuario Diocesano Santa Maria della Nova, stages of the Cammino Basiliano and the Limone di Rocca Imperiale PGI. If you are looking for hotels in Rocca Imperiale, first decide what you want to focus on during your trip: are you particularly interested in local history, religious traditions, hiking stages or regional food culture?

Castello Svevo and the medieval historic centre

Between 1220 and 1225, Frederick II of Hohenstaufen had a castle built in Rocca Imperiale to control the ancient Via Appia Traiana. It was the only transport route connecting Apulia with Calabria. This strategic role places the castle within the history of an important connection between the two regions.

Castello Svevo di Rocca Imperiale includes the Torre Frangivento: the almond-shaped tower, known by this name to local residents, dates from the 15th century and has three casemates. In the historic centre, a dense network of narrow lanes divides up blocks of houses, palaces, churches and small squares. The lanes lead to Castello Svevo and are reminiscent of the typical layout of medieval towns. The castle and network of lanes thus offer two different perspectives on the town’s history: the strategic importance of a transport route and the layout of the medieval historic centre.

Sanctuary, religious tradition and museum

The Church of Santa Maria della Nova was elevated to the status of a diocesan sanctuary on 5 March 2010. The Santuario Diocesano Santa Maria della Nova is located on Colle delle Cesine, four kilometres from the built-up area of Rocca Imperiale. On 2 July, Mass is celebrated at 07:00 in the mother church; a pilgrimage on foot then proceeds to the sanctuary with the icon of the Madonna. Check the current calendar before your trip if you would like to plan around this date.

The Museo delle Cere is located in the Monastero dei Frati Osservanti. It houses life-size wax figures of historical figures and recreates important events and developments that shaped Rocca Imperiale and the surrounding area, including the presence of Frederick II. If you plan to visit the museum, check the current opening hours beforehand.

Stages of the Cammino Basiliano

The opening stage of the Cammino Basiliano, Rocca Imperiale–Nocara, starts at Piazza Castello. From there, it reaches the archaeological site of Murge di Santa Caterina, regarded as a kind of outpost for defending the castle. The stage continues into the Valle del Torrente Canna. The landscape there consists of small cultivated plots, olive groves, oak forests and open fields.

Another stage, Rocca Imperiale–Montegiordano, offers views of Parco del Pollino and the Gulf of Taranto. The names of the two stages provide different points of orientation: the opening stage starts at Piazza Castello and heads towards Nocara, while the stage to Montegiordano is associated with views of Pollino and the Gulf of Taranto. This makes it possible to distinguish the routes mentioned by their respective destinations and landscapes.

Limone di Rocca Imperiale PGI

The Limone di Rocca Imperiale PGI is also closely connected to the municipal area: the area where the protected geographical indication is produced corresponds to the municipality of Rocca Imperiale. The lemon can be tasted fresh or unprocessed and is also used in fine pastry-making and gourmet cuisine. Alongside the castle, religious heritage and hiking stages, this offers another clearly defined local product as a travel theme.
