Aiello Calabro lies in the hills of the Tyrrhenian hinterland of the Province of Cosenza, between the sea and the mountains. Elevations range from 70 to 1,100 metres. The landscape of the town therefore includes both the hills near the coast and the slopes at considerably higher elevations. Alongside these natural features, palazzi, churches and local traditions shape Aiello Calabro’s cultural character.

Landscape and places to visit

The woodland landscape has distinct stands in clearly defined locations: cork oaks grow on the hillsides near the coast, while formations of Calabrian pine and silver fir occur above 1,000 metres. The information thus describes two areas at different elevations and with different landscapes, without conflating them. Casellone is equipped for excursions and picnics, adding a specific place for outdoor activities to the description of the wooded surroundings.

Castle and buildings

The surviving remains of Aiello Calabro Castle are situated on a rocky outcrop above the town. Archaeological excavations at the castle uncovered rooms. Its position above the town and the rooms brought to light are two distinct aspects of the castle: its topographical relationship to the slope and the archaeological findings.

Palazzo Giannuzzi Savelli is one of the most significant architectural elements of Aiello Calabro’s cultural heritage. Palazzo Viola is notable for its period of construction and decorative details. The building dates from the 16th century; its Baroque wrought-iron balcony dates from the 17th century. It also features a marble coat of arms and an ornate tuff-stone portal. The two dates therefore refer to different parts of the building. Together with the different materials, these details offer several specific points of reference for the palazzo’s architecture.

The churches also each have their own architectural features. The Cybo Chapel was built in 1597 by Pietro Barbalonga, with the participation of Tuscan stonemasons. It contains an altar made of green and black Calabrian marble. Notable features of the Church of Madonna delle Grazie include tall ampoule-shaped windows, a sculpted tuff-stone portal, a single-nave layout and stucco decoration. “Single-nave” describes a floor plan with one main nave; the windows, portal and stucco add details of the church’s design.

History and culture

The relics of Saint Geniale arrived in Aiello Calabro on 26 July 1667. In 1808, they were permanently transferred to the collegiate church of Santa Maria Maggiore, the town’s mother church. The Feast of San Geniale is still celebrated on 5 February and the first Sunday in May. If you would like to plan your trip around one of the celebrations, check the dates locally.

The town theatre of Aiello Calabro is built into the rock face and looks out towards the mountain horizon, from where the sea can be seen. Alongside it is the town’s popular theatrical tradition, known as “’a racchia”. Aiello Calabro also has a museum of peasant life. The theatre, tradition and museum represent different aspects of cultural life, without needing to be grouped together as a single offering.

Crafts and regional specialities

The production of damask and silk fabrics is part of Aiello Calabro’s historic craft tradition. It is associated with silkworm farming, which has been practised there since ancient times. The local dessert also has its own name: u ’nginèttu is a pastry coated with sugar and egg-white icing.

In the wider area around Aiello Calabro, the Savuto Valley is associated with the production and tasting of Savuto wine with a controlled designation of origin. This regional connection broadens the picture of the area beyond the town itself, without conflating it with the town’s own buildings or traditions.
