Get to know Altavilla through its individual churches, architectural landmarks and religious customs. If you’re looking for a hotel in Altavilla, these themes can help guide your trip planning. The Chiesa di S. Maria della Neve offers a glimpse into a history dating back to 1420; at the Chiesa di Santa Maria Assunta, medieval architectural features and its role as a parish church take center stage. Processions and the Tommarini add a distinctive local custom to these religious sites.

Chiesa di S. Maria della Neve: Foundation and Furnishings

The Chiesa di S. Maria della Neve is documented as having been founded in 1420. At the time, it served as a “hospitalis”: a sacred place for travelers, the sick and those in need. The term refers to a function that then included both people on the road and those in need. The building is a small, single-nave church. Inside, there is an altar from the mid-19th century with a statue of the saint to whom the church is dedicated. Its founding date and altar thus mark different points in history: the church brings together a story from the 15th century and furnishings from several centuries later.

From Cosenza, you can reach the church by taking the road through the center of Lappano and the hamlet of Altavilla. Then turn onto Via Casello and follow it to the church. This route provides clear directions for reaching the site.

The Parish Church and Its Medieval Arches

The Chiesa di Santa Maria Assunta is the parish church of Altavilla. Its churchyard forms a terrace overlooking the Crati Valley. Three medieval stone pointed-arch arcades support the terrace; they date from the late 13th century. Here, the church’s role as a parish church and a defining architectural feature can be considered together. The arches form part of the supporting structure, while the view from the churchyard across the valley offers a different perspective on the area.

Near the Assunta church is a tuff inscription bearing the words “hoc conditum est.” It may date from the imperial period, possibly the 2nd century AD. This dating is explicitly tentative. The inscription, its material and its possible date offer different points of reference for exploring the area’s earlier history.

Tommarini and the Procession of the Madonna della Neve

Religious customs include the traditional drums known as the “Tommarini.” They announce the novena of the Madonna della Neve and accompany the procession to the Chiesa di Santa Maria Assunta. The timing of the procession is also associated with a distinction preserved in local tradition: each year, the statue of the Madonna della Neve is carried through all the contrade of Altavilla. The calendar lists 5 August, but according to tradition the procession takes place after 15 August. The calendar date and the traditional timing therefore do not coincide. If you want to plan your trip around the procession, check the specific date in advance.

Traces Along the Torrente Corno

The ruins of ancient water mills can be seen a few meters from the banks of the Torrente Corno. Their location near the water connects the remains directly with the river and its former use. Another historical interpretation concerns the Motta di Corno: it is understood as a defensive system built around 1300 and introduced by the Angevins to protect the surrounding area. The mill ruins and the Motta thus represent different aspects of local history—the use of water and the protection of the surrounding area.

A hike to the riverbed of the Corno, described in 2011, began at Piazza Zumpo in the hamlet of Altavilla di Lappano. First, the group drove to the village of Ponte Mulino, then continued on foot. This tour description records a specific sequence of driving and walking and refers to 2011.
