Cassano Allo Ionio: Archaeology, Culture and Coast
Accommodation in Cassano Allo Ionio
Archaeological sites, religious architecture and thermal baths highlight different facets of Cassano Allo Ionio. The coastal area is also part of the municipality: there, several beaches, seaside districts and tourist centres alternate. When planning your stay, you can use these different focal points as a guide and decide which themes you want to shape your visit.
Archaeology and the history of Sibari
The Parco Archeologico di Sibari is a multifaceted site spanning more than ten centuries of history. The monumental buildings of Copiae visible there include the semicircular theatre, thermal baths, residential buildings, the North Gate and the last section of the city wall. The Museo Archeologico Nazionale della Sibaritide preserves and presents finds from the local archaeological site and the wider Sibaritide area. The exhibits trace the social, economic and cultural development of this region.
The collection's chronological layers include finds from Indigenous communities dating to before Greek colonisation, as well as evidence from the later Greek and Roman periods. This allows visitors to look beyond individual structures and consider the different societies and areas of life in Sibari whose traces have been preserved in the region.
Religious buildings, palazzo and theatre
The Cathedral of Cassano all’Jonio, dedicated to the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary, was elevated to the status of a minor basilica by Pope Francis in November 2014. The elegant façade of the Basilica Minore Diocesi di Cassano all’Jonio was built in 1795 under Bishop Coppola in a restrained Baroque style. The Torre Campanaria was built in 1608; it has four storeys and a bell chamber at the top.
Palazzo Viafora retains its original structure. Its architectural details include a restrained Baroque façade with pilasters and Corinthian capitals. The Art Nouveau garden features a monumental stone fountain and a terrace overlooking the Sibari plain. Since 18 December 2011, the palazzo has housed the Casa Museo Palazzo Viafora. Its collection includes 19th-century furniture, historical books and newspapers, a bridal trousseau, and contemporary household objects. The architectural features of the palazzo are thus complemented by objects that reveal different aspects of domestic life. Check the current opening hours before visiting.
The Teatro Comunale also offers a glimpse into the town's cultural history: it was built in 1921, restored to its original theatrical function after renovation, and reopened in 2007 with the first theatre season. It has 184 seats in total, including 114 in the stalls and 70 in the boxes.
Caves, thermal baths and coastal area
The Grotte di Sant’Angelo are a karst cave complex of speleological and tourist interest, located right beside the built-up area of Cassano all’Ionio. Another natural formation is the Grotta della Vucc’Ucciardo, located inside the Grande Pietra del Castello. These different cave features add a geological dimension to the picture formed by the architectural and archaeological remains.
At the Terme Sibarite, five main springs emerge side by side over a length of about 500 metres. Their waters are classified as hypothermal, sulphurous and moderately mineralised, and maintain a constant temperature of 25 °C. The complex also includes an open-air auditorium, leisure facilities and a park. The characteristics of the springs are thus considered alongside the other features of the thermal area, rather than reducing it to a single facility.
The Torre di Milone is a surviving fragment of what was probably part of the ramparts of a medieval castle built by the Normans on older foundations. The tower is easy to see from the road through the park of the same name. The coastal area, in turn, offers its own focal point, with beaches, seaside districts and tourist centres. Cassano's character therefore varies depending on whether you are more interested in archaeological remains, historic buildings, springs or the coast.
Festivals, routes and getting there
The main festival at the Santuario della Madonna della Catena takes place on the second Sunday in May. During the procession, men and women carry the image of the Madonna on their shoulders. Festival participants prepare Vussiniddi: spherical fried Crespelle made from flour, yeast, salt and water. This dish is part of the festival tradition; it is not described as a regularly available commercial offering. Check the dates and programme for the relevant year before your visit.
Stage 08 of the Cammino Basiliano ends at the Palazzo di Città in Cassano allo Ionio and is listed as open year-round. However, seasonal conditions may affect sections near the Raganello. To travel from Salerno to the Parco Archeologico di Sibari, take the A3 SA-RC motorway, exit at Sibari, then follow the SS 534 towards Contrada Casone and Laghi di Sibari in Cassano All’Ionio. From the Ionian side, the park can be reached via the Battipaglia–Reggio Calabria railway line.
