Orsomarso: Nature, Trails and History
Accommodation in Orsomarso
Orsomarso combines a striking mountain landscape with nature trails, historic buildings and vibrant local traditions. If you are looking for a hotel, these themes may play a part in choosing where to stay: would you mainly like to explore the landscape, learn about its history, or also discover local customs and dishes?
Mountain landscape and nature trails
The Catena montuosa dell’Orsomarso forms the southwestern extension of the Parco Nazionale del Pollino. Its highest peak is Cozzo del Pellegrino, at 1,987 metres. The Lorica pine is widespread on the steep slopes of Montea. Orsomarso therefore offers access to a range of landscape features, from the mountain range and its highest peak to a distinctive tree species found on the slopes of Montea.
Orsomarso is a starting point for numerous hiking trails in this part of the national park. Another destination for nature enthusiasts is the Riserva Naturale Valle del Fiume Argentino. It covers 3,980 hectares and lies entirely within the municipality of Orsomarso. The reserve has four nature trails, which follow former municipal roads or mule tracks that are maintained. As their maintenance conditions may change, it is advisable to check the conditions locally.
From Orsomarso, the entrance to the Riserva Naturale Valle del Fiume Argentino can be reached via an unpaved road along the Argentino River. Check the road conditions before setting out. The information about the trails and the access road provides different guidance: the trails follow former roads or mule tracks, while the entrance is reached via an unpaved road.
Historic places and buildings
The Torre dell’Orologio is a prominent landmark in Orsomarso. Built on a tuff rock, the tower overlooks the town. There is also a viewpoint at the Torre dell’Orologio. One historical interpretation links the tower to an original defensive function and to the role of a lookout point at the confluence of the Argentino and Porta la Terra rivers.
The churches also point to different historical periods. The Chiesa di Santa Maria di Mércuri dates back to the 10th century and is the only surviving evidence of the vanished medieval settlement of Mercourion. The Chiesa di San Giovanni Battista was built in the 17th century on the remains of a medieval chapel. Those interested in local history will find two distinct historical connections here: one to an earlier settlement, and another in a building that incorporates the remains of an older chapel.
The Cappella dei Santi Cosma e Damiano preserves features carved into the rock. It lies near the eastern edge of the built-up area, at a spot overlooking the Argentino River. The Grotta di San Michele in Simara offers another connection between history and landscape: remains of Byzantine frescoes are preserved in the cave. From 940 to 952/53, it was the hermitage of San Nilo da Rossano.
Traditions and local cuisine
A special custom in Orsomarso is “U mmitu” di San Giuseppe. Held every year, it is considered a custom bringing good luck and blessings. It is also a tradition of hospitality: homes are opened to friends, people in need and strangers, who are offered food. The Feast of San Giuseppe takes place on 19 March. Its stated elements include two bonfires and the tasting of typical dishes from local tradition.
Fusillo Orsomarsese is also part of the local food culture. This handmade fresh pasta takes the form of a long, thin strand. The Sagra del Fusillo di Orsomarso is part of the “Sagra di qualità ” quality festival network of the Unione Nazionale delle Pro Loco d’Italia (Unpli). Together with the San Giuseppe custom, this dish shows how closely local traditions are connected with preparing and sharing food.
