Maierà between Culture and Landscape
Accommodation in Maierà
Maierà combines a historic center with a history of sacred architecture, art in its streets, and distinctive landscape features. In the town center are the Museo del Peperoncino and the Palazzo Ducale; churches and viewpoints offer further perspectives on the town. Maierà can thus be explored through both its cultural heritage and its setting by a gorge and valley.
Culture and Local History
The Museo del Peperoncino is located in the Palazzo Patrizio in Maierà’s historic center and has ten exhibition halls. The “Aziende & Gastronomia” section features chili peppers prepared in a variety of ways. This section connects the museum’s focus on peperoncino with a practical look at gastronomy and methods of preparation. The Palazzo Ducale is also located in the historic center.
The religious buildings offer other historical connections. The Chiesa di S. Maria del Piano was built on the site of an earlier temple and features Renaissance frescoes; the Chiesa di S. Pietro is of Italo-Greek origin. The Cappella della Madonna del Carmine is also one of Maierà’s attractions. The earliest reliable traces of settlement in the area are attributed to Basilian monks who arrived from the East between the 6th and 7th centuries. The Chiesa di San Giacomo is considered one of Maierà’s oldest monuments and was built above caves carved into the rock, which served as a refuge for monks.
The historic center also preserves modern artworks, murals, and ceramic works by various artists in its narrow streets. Thus, alongside Renaissance frescoes and religious buildings, more recent art forms also contribute to the townscape. These diverse works add further artistic perspectives to the historic architecture.
Landscape and Orientation
The Piazza Croce offers striking views of the landscape. Maierà lies on the left side of the gorge of the Vaccata stream. The Vallata dei Mulini separates the town from Grisolia on the opposite side. Piazza Croce is therefore a named viewpoint, while Vaccata and Vallata dei Mulini describe geographical features connecting Maierà with its surroundings.
Getting There and Hiking Maps
If you are arriving from the north, the route follows the A3 (SA-RC) and exits at Lagonegro Nord; from there, continue on the SS18 state road to the Maierà-Grisolia exit. As road conditions can change, check the latest information before setting off.
For navigating the Pollino National Park area, Casa Maierà in Maierà is an authorized sales outlet for the park’s official hiking maps. The “Orsomarso trails” map set is also sold there. The map selection adds a practical point of reference for travelers interested in the national park’s hiking maps.
