Kłodzko is considered an important tourist and cultural centre of the Kłodzko Land. You can therefore base your choice on whether you are primarily interested in historic architecture, underground sites or regional collections.

Fortress, Old Town and the City’s History

Kłodzko Fortress stands on Zamkowe Wzgórze, west of the Nysa Kłodzka. An underground defensive system with about seven kilometres of passages stretches beneath the rampart hill. The Market Square is part of the historic Old Town. Its Town Hall is considered the most representative and grandest building; it no longer serves its former trading functions. The historic townhouses around the square were once homes to artisans, merchants and nobles.

Individual buildings also tell the story of different periods in the city’s history. The only surviving part of the former Town Hall is its square tower, dating from the transition between the Renaissance and Baroque periods. Kłodzko’s Gothic bridge is adorned with six votive figures. Ulica Czeska is considered the city’s oldest thoroughfare and was part of the former route between Prague and Wrocław. These places offer different perspectives: the square and houses show the city’s former uses, while the bridge and street evoke transport and religious imagery.

Underground Sites: Two Different Scales

Visitors should distinguish between two underground attractions. The Podziemna Trasa Turystyczna runs for 600 metres through chambers that evoke the past. At the Muzeum Ziemi Kłodzkiej, visitors can also explore medieval rooms more than six metres underground, which depict the everyday lives of Kłodzko’s former residents. By contrast, the approximately seven kilometres of the defensive system beneath the rampart hill refers to its passages, not the length of the tourist route.

The Muzeum Ziemi Kłodzkiej is housed in a Baroque building that was once a Jesuit college. Its extensive regional collections cover the history, archaeology, ethnography, art and natural history of the Kłodzko Land. The underground rooms are therefore not the only attraction: the collections also offer access to a range of regional topics. For practical visit planning, it is advisable to check the museum’s current visitor information.

Churches and Art Across the Centuries

The parish church of WNMP is the oldest surviving church in Kłodzko. It is first mentioned in 1194; the foundation stone for the present-day building was laid in 1344. These dates mark different milestones: the church’s early mention and the start of construction of the present-day building. Kościół św. Jerzego i Wojciecha was founded in the 15th century and rebuilt and expanded several times.

In 2015, frescoes by Karol Dankwart were discovered beneath layers of paint in this church. Work on them included uncovering, conservation and specialist examination. Another stage in sacred architecture is represented by the present-day Baroque church of Matki Bożej Różańcowej, built between 1628 and 1631. Its history also reflects a distinct artistic connection: frescoes by Feliks Antoni Scheffler survive on the refectory ceiling.

Those wishing to include several religious buildings in their itinerary can also follow a route along Kłodzko’s sacred monuments. It begins at the foot of the fortress.

Miniatures, a City Game and Getting Around

Park Miniatur Minieuroland offers a different focus. Covering more than 20,000 m², the site includes an arboretum with more than 40 finely crafted models, as well as plants from Polish, Belgian and Dutch nurseries. On display are miniature monuments and famous buildings from Poland, Europe and around the world. The park is a place for leisure and recreation for families, with activities suited to different age groups.

The facilities also take into account the needs of people with disabilities. The wide paths allow visitors to stroll with pushchairs and get around in wheelchairs. As accessibility information may change, check these details before your visit.

The city also offers the game “W grę miejską gram, Kłodzko dobrze znam”, which lets visitors discover interesting places in Kłodzko. Maps and guidebooks for the game are available free of charge from the tourist information office; check availability before travelling. A 0.7-kilometre connecting section leads from Kłodzko Miasto railway station via Moniuszki, Chełmońskiego and Kolejowa streets to the Dookoła Gminy Kłodzko circular route.

Fort Owcza Góra is also a historic building of particular historical and architectural significance. Check separately whether it is currently open to visitors. This allows you to choose between the Old Town, sacred architecture, the museum, underground spaces and miniatures as the focus of your stay, and to obtain the relevant visitor information for each attraction.
