Międzygórze combines the waterfall on the Wilczka with marked hiking trails and a townscape shaped by its history as a spa resort and regional Sudeten architecture. If you’re looking for a hotel in Międzygórze, you can choose where to stay based on the focus of your trip: nature by the waterfall, a particular walking time, or cultural history. The Ogród Bajek and the Church of St. Joseph add their own cultural attractions to this selection.

Waterfall and protected landscape

The Wodospad Wilczki Nature Reserve covers 2.75 hectares. Together with the Wilczka stream gorge, it protects the highest waterfall in the Sudetes. Międzygórze lies within the Śnieżnicki Park Krajobrazowy Landscape Park. The nature reserve is also located in this landscape park; it is additionally within the Góry Bialskie i Grupa Śnieżnika Natura 2000 site (PLH020016). This distinguishes the landscape park as the reference area for the town from the reserve’s additional Natura 2000 designation.

Downstream from the waterfall and gorge, the Wilczka continues through Międzygórze to a flood-control reservoir built at the beginning of the 20th century. Its stone dam is more than 29 metres high and 108 metres long. A metal walkway runs along it at a height of 30 metres, offering views of the mountains. The waterfall, gorge and dam therefore provide distinct points of reference for understanding the landscape around the Wilczka.

Hiking trails by duration

The red hiking trail from Międzygórze towards Igliczna is 3 kilometres long and takes about an hour. It runs above the Wodospad Wilczki waterfall, passes the Baszta rock formation and reaches a mountain shelter below Igliczna. A green hiking trail also leads from the dam on the Wilczka towards Igliczna.

Another route is marked blue and then green: it runs from Międzygórze via Smrekowiec and Mariańskie Skały to Śnieżnik. This route is listed as taking about 3 hours and 30 minutes one way. The Jakobsweg pilgrimage trail, marked in 2013, connects Międzygórze with Krzeszów, the starting point of the Sudeten Jakobsweg. A roughly 20-kilometre section of the Jakobsweg runs from Międzygórze via Igliczna, Marianówka and Pławnica to Bystrzyca Kłodzka; it is estimated to take about 4.5 to 5 hours.

The stated durations differ considerably for planning purposes: from the roughly one-hour red trail, through the approximately three-and-a-half-hour route towards Śnieżnik, to the longer section to Bystrzyca Kłodzka. Walking times on the hiking trails may vary depending on conditions. When choosing a route, also check whether the stated duration is for one way or refers to a specific section.

Garden, townscape and architectural history

Ogród Bajek is at an altitude of 780 metres between the mountains of Toczek and Igliczna, on the yellow hiking trail from Międzygórze to Maria Śnieżna. The garden covers 0.23 hectares. Visitors can admire fairy-tale figures and spend time among the trees, shrubs and flowers. The garden was created after the First World War by forester Izydor Kriesten, who made the figures from tree roots, cones and bark. These materials give the fairy-tale theme a distinctive, immediately recognisable form.

The townscape combines features of a 19th-century spa resort with regional Sudeten architecture. In the Sanatoryjna area, wooden spa and guesthouse buildings were constructed from the mid-19th century onwards in the Swiss and Tyrolean styles, with distinctive Scandinavian elements. The “Gigant” building is among the largest wooden buildings of its kind in Europe; its façades are elaborately designed and its interiors are spacious. The Church of St. Joseph, the Bridegroom of the Blessed Virgin Mary, offers another way to explore architectural and art history. It preserves a Baroque altar and pulpit, sculptures by Michał Ignacy Klahr the Younger, and late Baroque polychrome paintings.
