Braga: Cultural History, Craftsmanship and Nature
Accommodation in Braga
Braga reveals itself through several layers of time: Roman places of worship, historic cityscapes, pilgrimage traditions and craftsmanship each bring a different emphasis. Choosing the focus of your stay can put architecture, archaeology, regional culture or landscape at the centre.
Heritage and Architecture
The historic centre of Guimarães and the Couros zone link the city’s history with the emergence of Portuguese national identity in the 12th century. Both places also illustrate the development of Portuguese architecture from the 15th to the 19th century. In Couros, tanneries, workers’ houses and historic urban spaces preserve evidence of traditional tanning. This urban heritage therefore includes not only individual buildings, but also the spaces where people worked and lived.
In Guimarães, the Paço dos Duques de Bragança represents a different architectural form: this fortified manor house dates from the 15th century and is considered unique on the Iberian Peninsula. It is classified as a National Monument. In 1959, it opened to the public as a museum. The Palácio dos Biscainhos in Braga, meanwhile, is a remarkable example of Portuguese domestic architecture; its development spans the 17th and 18th centuries, as well as the 19th century.
The Sanctuary of Bom Jesus do Monte comprises a Stations of the Cross with chapels, fountains, allegorical sculptures and formal gardens. These different elements give the site its layered appearance: the path, sculptures and gardens together form part of its character.
Archaeological Traces in Braga
The D. Diogo de Sousa Archaeology Museum is the most important archaeological museum in Braga and the surrounding region. It offers permanent and temporary exhibitions, educational activities, a library and a cafeteria; its gardens are open to the public. In addition to its archaeological themes, the museum offers visitors a range of facilities.
A Roman inscription from the 2nd century on an exterior wall of Braga Cathedral bears witness to the cult of Isis in Bracara Augusta. The Fonte do Ídolo is a rock sanctuary of pre-Christian Roman origin in Braga’s present-day historic centre. Reliefs from the Roman era and Latin inscriptions name Nabia and Tongoenabiago as deities who were worshipped there. At the Roman Baths of Alto da Cividade, visitors can see the remains of a bath complex and a Roman theatre.
The Mamoa de Lamas represents a much earlier period: this prehistoric burial monument was built about 5,000 years ago. The Palácio dos Biscainhos and the archaeological sites mark other points in time; the Mamoa extends this perspective back into prehistory.
Barcelos: Craftsmanship and the Way of St James
The traditional Barcelos fair combines the sale of local agricultural produce with a wide range of crafts and goods, including ceramics, figurines, woodwork, linen, embroidery, pottery, woven goods and metalwork. The market brings together agricultural produce and various forms of local production, rather than focusing on a single type of product.
The urban route of the Portuguese Way of St James also passes through Barcelos: it crosses the medieval town centre and includes the Paço dos Condes with the Cruzeiro do Galo, which symbolises the Miracle of St James. Barcelos also has hostels and several dedicated facilities for pilgrims on the Portuguese Way of St James. In this way, the city’s medieval sites and pilgrimage traditions come together in a tangible form.
Landscape and Historic Routes
The Serra do Gerês features diverse forests, rich flora and fauna, and native Garrano horses and Barrosã cattle. The GR50 Grande Rota Peneda-Gerês brings various historic and seasonal types of route to life: Roman roads, medieval paths, seasonal trails between the Brandas and Inverneiras, old cattle tracks to the high pastures, pilgrimage routes and former smuggling routes. Nature and traditional uses of the routes represent different aspects of the trail; the smuggling routes belong explicitly to the past.
