Campo do Gerês brings together Roman road culture, rural mountain architecture and nature in Peneda-Gerês National Park. Several themes can help you plan your stay: the route of the Via XVIII / Geira, the village’s architectural styles, a hiking trail with a stated distance and duration, and Mata de Albergaria. Whether you are particularly interested in history, architecture or woodland landscapes, the local sights offer specific points of interest.

The Roman Geira and its milestones

The Via XVIII / Geira passes through Campo do Gerês and is classified as a National Monument. It is also known as the Via Nova or Via XVIII of the Itinerarium Antonini and connected Bracara Augusta with Asturica Augusta. In the Campo do Gerês area, the Via Nova passes Roman milestones XXVII, XXVIII and XXIX. The XXVII milestone extends for 1,650 metres. Its classified route runs along the Campo do Gerês valley towards Portela de Vilarinho, where it lies on the EN 307 national road.

The Museu da Geira focuses on Roman road-building techniques and the means of transport used at the time. Topics such as construction and transport thus add to the story of the historic road route. Near the museum, the Romanesque Ponte de Eixões allows pedestrians to cross the stream. Trincheira do Campo do Gerês lies near the entrance to Mata de Albergaria and borders the XXIX milestone of the Geira.

Hiking trail and walking routes nearby

The PR5 – Trilho da Águia do Sarilhão is nine kilometres long, with a stated duration of three hours. The trail passes through rural settlements. A warning states that, due to improvement works on the Guarda / Albergaria forest road, it will be partially closed from 27 March 2026 for an estimated period of 240 days. Check the conditions for this hiking trail before setting out.

Another walking route leads from Campo do Gerês to the entrance of Mata de Albergaria and along the river to Portela do Homem. This offers two different options: a hiking trail with a specific distance and duration, and a route connecting the village, the forest entrance and the riverside. The two descriptions provide different points of reference to help you plan your time outdoors according to your interests.

Mountain architecture and culture in the village

Campo do Gerês preserves rural mountain architecture, with narrow lanes, Canastros and wooden balconies. The PR5 also passes through rural settlements, where Espigueiros, houses with ridge crosses and wooden balconies form part of the village landscape. The Igreja matriz de Campo do Gerês has a small bell tower and floral Stations of the Cross motifs on its gables—details that add another architectural accent alongside the traditional homes and granaries.

The Cruzeiro de São João do Campo is also a designated cultural monument: it has been classified as a National Monument since 23 June 1910. The National Park gateway in Campo do Gerês is considered the gateway to Peneda-Gerês National Park closest to Braga. It offers environmental education activities for schools, institutions and other groups, including guidance during special activities.

Mata de Albergaria and festivals

Mata de Albergaria is a representative Galician-Portuguese oak forest in Peneda-Gerês National Park. A section of the Roman Geira runs through the forest; the ruins of its bridges and a significant group of milestones can be found there. Nature and culture thus come together in Campo do Gerês’s landscape: the oak forest and Roman remains are part of the same area.

Campo do Gerês festivals include São João, the Senhor de Có-de-Seda festival in June or July, and the Senhora da Conceição festival on 8 December. These dates give your interest in local culture a seasonal focus. If you would like to plan a trip around a particular festival, check the event dates in advance.
