If you are considering Gilmonde as a destination for a hotel stay, two circular hiking trails, along with its archaeological heritage and religious architectural history, offer concrete points to consider when planning your trip. The hikes have notably different difficulty ratings, while the cultural heritage focuses on the history of Castelo de Faria and the construction phases of Igreja e Convento da Franqueira. You can tailor your stay to whichever of these interests you most.

Hiking on two circular trails

The “No trilho da Sra. da Consolação às Margens do Cávado” trail (PR5 BCL) is approximately 12.5 kilometres long, follows a circular route and is rated as an easy short-distance hiking trail. Its route passes through the freguesias of Fornelos, Gilmonde and Vila Seca. The section in Gilmonde runs through rural surroundings and farmland.

The “No Trilho do Monte da Franqueira” trail (PR6 BCL) is an approximately 12-kilometre loop through the freguesia of Gilmonde. Its difficulty is rated “algo difícil” (III); PR5 is rated easy. The approximate lengths of around 12 and 12.5 kilometres are similar, while the ratings mark a clear difference. Check the current trail conditions before setting out on either hike.

Archaeological heritage of Castelo de Faria

Castelo de Faria is documented as early as 1128 and is considered the most important archaeological site in the municipality of Barcelos. It is located in the freguesia of Gilmonde and also extends into some neighbouring freguesias. The castle ruins and the archaeological site below them are located in the freguesias of Gilmonde and Milhazes; they were classified as a National Monument by Decree-Law No. 40684 of 13 July 1956.

The dates refer to different events: 1128 is the date of the castle’s documentary record, while 1956 is when the ruins and archaeological site were legally classified. For historical context, it is therefore important to distinguish between an early written mention and a later heritage designation.

Construction history of Igreja e Convento da Franqueira

Igreja e Convento da Franqueira is located at Senhor da Fonte da Vida in the freguesias of Pereira and Gilmonde, in the municipality of Barcelos, in the district of Braga. It is classified as a Monument of Public Interest. The present building was constructed in the 16th century and expanded and remodelled between 1678 and 1708. Seven chapels of the Passos remain in the surrounding area.

Unlike the castle, the historical focus here is on different periods: the church’s construction and a later phase of expansion and remodelling. The seven chapels are another surviving feature in the surrounding area. The two cultural heritage sites therefore differ both in their archaeological or architectural character and in the historical dates mentioned.

Getting there and shooting sports

Gilmonde is accessible via the EN 205. Clube de Tiro de Fervença is based at Quinta de Fervença, in the freguesia of Gilmonde, municipality of Barcelos. It manages shooting sports facilities for members and other participants in official or private sporting events. If you are considering taking part, check the participation requirements before visiting.

Hiking, archaeological heritage, architectural history and shooting sports each appeal to different interests. The two circular trails can be compared by their approximate length and difficulty rating; the historical topics focus on the documentary record of the castle, the archaeological site and the construction phases of Igreja e Convento. This can help you decide which of these interests you would like to shape your trip to Gilmonde.
