Where the Homem and Cávado rivers meet, Vila Verde unfolds through river landscapes, trails and local culture. The area encompasses varied landscapes and riverbanks, including Praia Fluvial do Faial. In the mountainous areas of the municipality, steep slopes, ridges and gorges shape the terrain. Different landforms come together here, from the riverbanks to the mountain ranges.

Hiking Trails and River Landscapes

Hiking trails can be found in the north of the municipality, as well as eco-trails along the banks of the Homem and Cávado rivers. The network of routes also includes a cycle path within the town. Three signposted hiking trails can be compared by length: the Trilho de Aboim da Nóbrega is 12,156 metres long, the Trilho do Fojo do Lobo e Nascente do Vade is 13,095 metres long, and the Trilho de Mixões da Serra – Valdreu is 13,035 metres long. This makes the route at Fojo do Lobo e Nascente do Vade 60 metres longer than the one at Mixões da Serra – Valdreu; of the three, Aboim da Nóbrega is the shortest.

The short tourist and cultural Trilho do Fojo do Lobo is a different route. Along the way, mountain views meet the story of an old wolf trap: it was used to protect the population and livestock from wolf attacks. Visitors interested both in the landscape and in earlier ways of protecting herds will find both in the route’s theme.

Activities on the Water

The Homem and Cávado rivers offer good conditions for canoeing and sport fishing. The Clube Náutico de Prado offers canoeing for training, recreation and competition. The Estação Náutica de Vila Verde promotes water tourism based on local water resources. The area’s varied connections with water thus range from activities on the rivers to a platform that puts water tourism at its centre.

Praia Fluvial do Faial has bathing aids and facilities for people with reduced mobility. Check the status of these facilities before a future visit. Praia Fluvial do Faial has also received the Blue Flag and the “Praia Acessível, Praia para Todos” award; as these are seasonal recognitions, it is also advisable to check before travelling.

Bridges, History and Crafts

The Ponte do Prado over the Cávado is classified as a National Monument. In the Middle Ages, it was an important crossing on the route between Braga and Ponte de Lima. Vila Verde’s archaeological heritage also dates back a long way: it includes Iron Age castros and citânias, some of which remained inhabited into the Middle Ages.

The Centro Interpretativo do PatrimĂłnio Cultural is located in the Albergue de Peregrinos S. Pedro de GoĂŁes. Among other subjects, it covers the history of Vila Verde, festivals, markets and pilgrimages, crafts and gastronomy. Exhibitions there also feature the Caminho de Santiago through Terras de Vila Verde. Visits are possible by prior appointment; arrange your visit in advance.

At the Centro Interpretativo do Artesanato em Cerâmica, visitors can work with clay on a potter’s wheel. The centre is located in Vila de Prado, in a former building of the Paços do Concelho de Prado, which is thought to date from the 17th century. Another distinctive craft tradition is the Lenços de Namorados: these cloths, characteristic of Vila Verde and made of linen or cotton, bear embroidered love messages.

Festivals and Local Cuisine

The Festa de Santo António in Vila Verde lasts several days and is still celebrated. Its programme includes a procession, folk traditions, music, traditional games and horse races. The Romaria de Nossa Senhora do Alívio takes place on the second and third Sundays in September. Its celebrations include a night-time candlelit procession from the sanctuary to the parish church of Soutelo. At the Santuário de Mixões da Serra, there is a tradition of the Bênção dos animais; the animal blessing is followed by a procession in honour of Santo António.

The “Fevereiro – Mês do Romance” programme lasts 28 days and puts the Lenços de Namorados at its centre. Its programme includes workshops open to the entire population. October is the month of the Festa das Colheitas in Vila Verde. If you want to time your trip to coincide with a particular festival, check the date for your planned year of travel in advance.

The cuisine also offers a distinctive glimpse of the region: traditional Minho dishes in Vila Verde include Rojões à moda do Minho, and Pudim Abade de Priscos is part of the region’s gastronomic heritage. Vinho Verde is produced on the slopes of Vila Verde. Local dishes and wine thus complement impressions of the river landscape, crafts and festival culture.
