Arnóia reveals itself through a castle on a mountain spur, the historic settlement of Aldeia do Castelo, and trails through woodland. Also here are the church and monastery of Arnóia, as well as the PR1 “À volta do Castelo e Villa de Basto”. The buildings tell of different periods and functions; when planning your route, it is worth taking a close look at the details of each described section.

The Castle and the History of the Settlement

Castelo de Arnoia is a Romanesque castle on a mountain spur. Its prominent defensive features include a keep, a square tower, a single door and a cistern. The keep’s top floor and the battlements were reconstructed in the 20th century. The site therefore brings together medieval castle architecture and later additions. Castelo de Arnoia is also part of the Rota do Românico do Tâmega e Sousa.

The original settlement of Villa de Basto arose around the castle, under its protection. It became the municipality’s centre of power, particularly from the beginning of the 16th century; in 1520, it received a charter from D. Manuel I. The surviving buildings illustrate the political and judicial powers once concentrated there. The historic settlement below the castle is now called Aldeia do Castelo. Its consistent, uniform appearance and a group of landmark buildings offer a glimpse of the role that buildings and their functions played in the life of the village community.

Church and Monastery

Igreja e Convento de Arnóia consists of an elongated church with monastery buildings attached to the sides. The Benedictine monastery built in Arnóia during the Middle Ages is one of the place’s defining historical features. The identity of its founder is disputed. The complex and the history of its foundation thus offer different points of interest for a visit: the visible layout of the church and monastery buildings, as well as the historical question of who founded it.

PR1: Circular Trail and Route Sections

The PR1 “À volta do Castelo e Villa de Basto” is designated as a circular trail approximately 17 kilometres long. It starts and ends in Aldeia do Castelo in the parish of Arnóia and is classified for hiking and mountain biking. The first loop section is listed as 4,250 metres: it follows forest tracks from the village of Castelo to Calvelo Hill, whose summit is crowned by a small chapel. When planning, it is helpful to distinguish the distance given for this first section from the total length of the PR1, approximately 17 kilometres. The Chapel of Santa Luzia is also among the points of interest for visitors in Aldeia do Castelo along the route.

After crossing a narrow stream, a steep climb leads to the Penícia viewpoint. Check the latest route details before setting out. This will help you plan according to the described sections and the distance of each.

Finding Your Way Around

The Centro Interpretativo do Castelo de Arnoia is housed in a restored former primary school in Aldeia do Castelo. It provides information about the National Monument and also serves as an information centre for the Rota do Românico. The centre also offers a range of educational and cultural activities. It therefore combines guidance on Castelo with information about the Romanesque Route.

The approach to Castelo de Arnoia leads from a partly unpaved road onto a path between rocks. As ground conditions can change, check the latest information about the path before your visit.
