Abadim stretches across one of the slopes of the Serra da Cabreira. The northern area reaches considerable heights; near Abadim, the Rio Peio runs through a deep, damp, fertile valley. Hiking trails, cultural and historical sites, and glimpses of nature and tradition offer different ways to plan your trip.

Hiking trails between the Levada and mountain peaks

The Trilho da Levada de VĂbora begins beside the Oural Dam in the parish of Abadim, in Cabeceiras de Basto. It follows the Levada and is about 10.3 km long. The Levada is an old irrigation system that was once essential for powering the Moinhos de Rei; the Levada da VĂbora supplies the mill complex. The trail therefore follows a water system whose significance is also tied to the history of the mills.

The Trilho de Torrinheiras offers a different perspective. The trail begins in Torrinheiras, in Abadim, and leads to the summit of Monte das Torrinheiras, at an elevation of 1,159 m. From there, you can enjoy 360-degree views of GerĂȘs, AlvĂŁo, MarĂŁo, and Barroso. When choosing between the trails, different details take center stage: the approximate length and connection to irrigation on the Levada route, or the summit elevation and panorama at Torrinheiras.

Mills, landmarks, and local traditions

The Moinhos de Rei are a group of mills in Abadim, built under King D. Dinis. The mill complex also includes a leisure area. The Pelourinho de Abadim features three distinct architectural elements: a column with a circular cross-section, a four-sided capital, and a conical top.

The Igreja de São Jorge de Abadim is a modern-era religious building of significant cultural value. The celebration of São Jorge is among Abadim’s traditional festivals and pilgrimages. Local crafts also offer a glimpse into traditional ways of life: weaving and patchwork quilts are among the traditional crafts.

The archaeological complex of Marmoirais in Abadim offers another glimpse into the past. It may date from the 2nd or 1st millennium BC; this dating should therefore be regarded as a possible estimate.

Nature, bread, and other experiences

At the NĂșcleo Interpretativo de Vida Selvagem, visitors can learn about the biodiversity of the municipality of Cabeceiras de Basto, particularly the wildlife and plant life of the Serra da Cabreira. At the same time, the NIVS preserves and maintains the customs and traditions of Terra de Basto. Nature and culture each have a place here.

The Casa do PĂŁo recreates the traditional bread-making cycle, and bread-making tools are on display there. During group visits booked in advance, visitors can watch bread being baked and taste it. If you would like to plan this experience, be sure to book your group visit in advance.

The trails around the Oural Reservoir offer an opportunity for mountain biking. The Área de Lazer do Oural is equipped with several tables and benches for picnics. By contrast, the Zona de Banhos da Ranha on the Rio Peio in Abadim is unsupervised and is not classified as a river bathing area; it is intended for water sports.

The Miradouro de Porto d’Olho is located at Outeiro da Varela in Abadim. Together with the trails, the history of the mills, and the cultural attractions, it adds to the range of themes you can use to shape your time in Abadim.
