Atlantic dunes and marine life

The Parque Natural do Litoral Norte encompasses the longest and best-preserved Atlantic dune system in northern Portugal. Two nature trails offer different experiences: the Trilho intertidal de Mar is an exploratory walk where visitors can collect data about marine life and share the information they gather. An observation point offers a large viewing window onto the estuary and the mouth of the Cávado. Seating invites visitors to take a break and enjoy the landscape; the point is also suitable for birdwatching and walkers.

Trails and water

A section of the Ecovia do Litoral Norte between Marinhas and Esposende starts in the town of Esposende and heads north to Rio de Moinhos in Marinhas. The Ecovia also connects Ofir Beach and the beaches of Apúlia with the municipality of Póvoa de Varzim to the south. Alongside the section described, other named connections on the route are therefore also included.

The municipality of Esposende offers good conditions for canoeing on the calm waters of the Cávado and Neiva rivers and their estuaries. The activities differ in how you get around and what they focus on: on the Trilho intertidal de Mar, you collect data about marine life on a walk; here, you take a canoe onto calm river and estuary waters. This makes the choice between exploring on foot and an activity on the water more concrete.

Maritime history and local collections

The Museu Marítimo de Esposende is located in the Estação de Socorros a Náufragos, also known as the Estação Salva-Vidas. The building was inaugurated on 30 December 1906. In the museum’s Torre da Memória, the collection includes around a thousand photographs of men and women connected with maritime work, dating from 1893 to 1962. The images thus bring into focus people whose work was connected with the sea.

The Museu Municipal de Esposende is housed in the former Teatro-Club building, dating from 1911, and opened as a museum in 1993. It exhibits and preserves the historical and cultural, ethnographic, artistic and landscape heritage of the municipality of Esposende. The museums have different thematic focuses: the Torre da Memória features photographs connected with maritime work, while the Museu Municipal focuses on the diverse aspects of the municipality’s heritage.

Architecture and other cultural sites

The Casa Museu Viana de Lima, also known as Casa das Marinhas, dates from 1954 to 1957 and combines modernist and traditionalist architectural features. This combination offers an architectural perspective that cannot be attributed to just one of these two styles. The garden is designed for outdoor use, taking in the landscape and spending time in the fresh air. The house, garden and landscape thus represent distinct but interconnected aspects of this example.

The Centro Interpretativo de S. Lourenço offers visits to the centre and the Castro de S. Lourenço; it also has a picnic area. Alongside museums and architecture, the cultural offerings therefore include a place where a visit to the centre and the Castro can be combined with a break.
