Marinhas brings together coastal trails, beaches and a range of natural and cultural themes. The Marinhas–Esposende section of the Ecovia do Litoral Norte, the PR5 – Pela Arriba Fóssil hiking trail, the Centro de Educação Ambiental in Monte Marinhas and Casa das Marinhas each offer a distinct focus. If you are looking for a hotel, you can use these differences to shape your trip around the coast and trails, environmental education, or architecture and history.

Coast and trails

The Marinhas–Esposende section of the Ecovia do Litoral Norte runs as far as Rio de Moinhos in Marinhas and provides access to the beaches of Suave Mar, Cepães and Rio de Moinhos. At Praia de Rio de Moinhos, there are walking paths and recreational fishing.

PR5 – Pela Arriba Fóssil is a 12-kilometre linear hiking trail that passes through Marinhas and is partially signposted along the fossil cliff. The two trails therefore differ in the specific features described: the Ecovia provides access to the beaches mentioned, while PR5 runs along the fossil cliff as a hiking route. As signage may change, check the current route before setting out.

Praia de Suave Mar is in Parque Natural do Litoral Norte; it has natural dunes and vegetation typical of these habitats. Praia de Cepães is in an urban setting between dunes and is easy to reach by road and boardwalk. The activity profiles overlap: windsurfing, kitesurfing, surfing, recreational fishing and walking trails are listed as sports and leisure activities at both beaches; a surf school is also listed for Suave Mar. Some activities may be available seasonally.

Nature and the environment in Monte Marinhas

The Centro de Educação Ambiental in Monte Marinhas houses the permanent exhibition “Ambiente Interativo”. It covers water, waste, biodiversity, energy, sustainable mobility and climate change. At the centre, a biodiversity trail showcases native Portuguese forest species as well as aromatic and medicinal plants. Monte Marinhas therefore brings together a broad range of environmental topics and a trail focused on plant species.

Advance booking is required for guided tours of the exhibition, regardless of group size.

Architecture and history

Casa das Marinhas was built in Marinhas between 1954 and 1957 as Viana de Lima’s own residence. The house is open to the public by prior appointment, so arrange your visit in advance.

The Roman remains of Rio de Moinhos in Marinhas include ceramic objects from amphorae and other vessels dating to Roman times, found on the beach. The medieval tombs of Marinhas bear witness to Christian burial practices that were widespread in the region during and beyond the Reconquista. The two subjects offer different historical perspectives: Roman ceramic finds on the one hand and medieval burial traditions on the other.

The old mills in Marinhas are also part of local history: they are cylindrical granite buildings on the hillside. Albergue de São Miguel de Marinhas lies on the Caminho Português da Costa to Santiago de Compostela, providing a direct connection to the Portuguese Coastal Way.
