If you’re looking for a hotel in Fao, you can plan your trip around the topics that interest you most: the coastal landscape near Apúlia, the sargaço tradition and the history of Fão’s historic centre. These sites offer different perspectives—from the beach and its natural surroundings to local stories of work and architecture.

Coast, beach and birdlife

Praia de Apúlia is a wide sandy beach, with some rocky outcrops to the north. Wooden walkways make it easier to access the sandy beach. If this access is important to you, check the situation before your visit, as these facilities may change.

Caniçal de Apúlia is considered a priority habitat under the Habitats Directive. It is also an important habitat for numerous bird species, including migratory birds and species that breed or overwinter there. The beach and the habitat therefore represent different aspects of the landscape: the sandy beach with its rocky outcrops, and a habitat that is important to various bird species.

Leisure activities and coastal connection

Leisure activities at Praia de Apúlia include windsurfing, kitesurfing and sport fishing; availability may vary by season. If one of these activities is a deciding factor for your trip, check what’s available in advance.

While Praia de Apúlia refers to a single beach, the Fão–Apúlia section of the Ecovia do Litoral Norte provides a connection between Praia de Ofir and the beaches of Apúlia. This distinguishes a description of a specific beach from the broader route connecting several named coastal locations.

Sargaço: exhibition and traditional working methods

The Museu do Sargaço presents the history and culture of sargaço harvesting. Exhibits include clothing, boats, work tools, building types and masseira fields, complemented by historical videos and photographs. The story of harvesting therefore encompasses objects and tools, as well as visual records and links to architecture and agriculture.

The PR12 – Trilho das Masseiras offers a different perspective. It recalls former ways of making a living through the interplay between sea and land: sargaço was dried on sandy plots and then used as fertiliser in the fields. While the museum presents harvesting through exhibits and visual material, the PR12 focuses on this former use of sargaço.

A visit to the Museu do Sargaço must be booked at least one week in advance. Take this lead time into account when planning and confirm your appointment again before travelling.

Masseiras across the wider coastal area

Masseiras form an agricultural system in the coastal strip between Esposende (Apúlia) and Póvoa de Varzim (Aguçadoura). Dune areas are converted into productive horticultural plots without the use of machinery. The landscape described therefore extends beyond individual fields near Apúlia.

Today, only a few masseira fields remain in use along this coastal strip. They are considered a living testament to former working methods and sustainable practices. The few fields still cultivated today and the conversion of dunes into horticultural plots show two sides of this system: its present-day form and the history of working with the sea and land that it preserves.

Historical influences in Fão

In the Middle Ages, Fão was an important centre of salt production. The historic centre also shows a marked Brazilian cultural influence dating from the early 20th century. This can be seen in remarkable residential houses built by wealthy returnees from Brazil. Salt production and these houses point to different historical periods: medieval Fão and the cultural influence of the early 20th century.

In Fao, the coastal landscape, traditional working methods and local history sit side by side, each with its own emphasis. When planning your trip, you can decide whether you’re most interested in the beach and nature, sargaço harvesting or Fão’s historical influences.
