Palmeira De Faro offers several distinct themes to consider when planning your trip: the PR5, with its fossils and natural features; archaeological sites; architectural history; and religious feast days. If you are looking for a hotel, first decide which of these aspects you want to shape your stay. The trail starting points and dates of the festivals celebrated each year provide practical guidance.

Trails Through the Landscape and Coastal Views

The PR5 “Pela Arriba Fóssil” can be started at Monte Faro in Palmeira de Faro. It runs along a large part of the ridge of the fossil cliff coast, which formed around 80,000 years ago. There, hikers can find numerous fossil traces dating from the same period as the appearance of the first land plants. The trail also offers direct contact with the forest and the chance to observe the local flora and fauna.

The PR11 “Entre vales e quintas” begins at the Igreja Paroquial de Palmeira de Faro. If you are comparing the trails, these are two different starting points: Monte Faro for the PR5 and the parish church for the PR11. From the Miradouro de Monte de Faro, the view extends over the Atlantic coast between Póvoa de Varzim and Esposende.

Archaeological Traces and Architectural History

The mines and mining ruins in Palmeira de Faro are concentrated particularly around Monte do Faro. The archaeological heritage also includes Castro Sr. dos Desamparados: a small settlement with a defensive system of two walls and characteristic round houses. The Capela do Senhor dos Desamparados was built on the Castro between 1825 and 1826. Its construction fulfilled a vow made during the French invasions.

The DĂłlmen da Cruzinha is probably intact. It has a maximum diameter of 27 metres and a height of two metres. It is a megalithic tomb in scrubland south of Quinta de S. Givas. These details give the site a different historical focus from the architectural history of the churches and chapels.

The original Igreja Paroquial de Palmeira de Faro dates from the 12th century; it was remodelled in the neoclassical style in the 17th and 18th centuries. The Capela de Santo AntĂłnio was built in 1776 and restored in 1976. The house of Manuel de Boaventura is also located in the district of SusĂŁo.

Feast Days and Local Tradition

The religious popular festival in honour of Santo António is celebrated every year on 13 June and is associated with the tradition of the “Missa dos Pássaros.” The festival of Senhor dos Desamparados takes place annually on the first weekend of August.

Another local tradition concerns Santa Eufémia, a small hill 200 metres from the houses of Susão. According to local tradition, remains of a chapel’s foundations are said to have been there. The location and the cautious wording go together: this is a story from local tradition.

A Practical Note

The water from Fonte das 3 Bicas is not monitored. Therefore, do not assume that it is safe to drink. When planning your stay, you can take this practical local detail into account alongside your interests in trails, history or festivals.
