Explore Guimarães through its buildings and collections, as well as its crafts and trails through the countryside. The historic centre and the Couros Zone illustrate the development of certain building types, particularly from the 15th to the 19th century. The archaeological site of Citânia de Briteiros also offers a different perspective on the area’s history.

Heritage and layers of history

Citânia de Briteiros is located on Monte de São Romão in the municipality of Guimarães and is classified as a National Monument. In Guimarães itself, the Caminho de Torres passes through the historic centre, which is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. This 600-kilometre pilgrimage route connects Salamanca with Santiago de Compostela.

Notable buildings include the 15th-century aristocratic Paço dos Duques de Bragança and the Igreja de São Miguel do Castelo. The church was built during the first three decades of the 13th century. A nationalist historiographical tradition links it to the baptism of D. Afonso Henriques. The palace houses collections of tapestries, porcelain, paintings, furniture, sculptures and weapons. The Palácio Vila Flor dates from the 18th century; gardens surround the building and offer a privileged view of the city.

The museums also offer different perspectives: the Museu de Alberto Sampaio houses one of Portugal’s most valuable collections of sacred art. The CIAJG brings together objects from different periods, places and contexts with works by contemporary artists. The exhibition at the Casa da Memória offers insights into the Guimarães community through images, stories, documents and objects. Its themes range from prehistory and the founding of Portugal to rural societies, festivals and the industrialisation of the Vale do Ave, and on to the present day.

Crafts, traditions and culinary experiences

Guimarães embroidery is recognisable by its six colours—red, blue, beige, grey, white and black—its stylised motifs and its twenty-one stitches. At the Oficina de Bordado de Guimarães, participants learn the technique, make their own embroidered piece and take it home as a personal souvenir. Those interested in hands-on experiences of local culture can also find activities at the Casa da Memória: year-round, by prior appointment, it offers guided visits tailored to each visitor group, as well as creative workshops in pottery, ceramics, embroidery, textile printing and cuisine.

The Festas Nicolinas are student festivities in honour of Saint Nicholas of Myra; their first documented mention dates from 1664. The Festas da Cidade e Gualterianas also have a centuries-old tradition. Culinary experiences come in various formats: the Oficina do Sabor at Paladário de Guimarães is a participatory cooking experience with the chefs, followed by a tasting. A wine tasting at Quinta dos Encados includes regional cheeses, toast and bread; the experience also includes a tour of the quinta.

Trails and nature on Penha

The Rota da Biodiversidade da Penha is a linear walking route of around four kilometres, with eleven information panels. Ten habitats protected under Portuguese legislation have been identified on Montanha da Penha. The route offers a practical way to explore the landscape on foot, stopping at the panels along the way.

The Parque de Lazer da Cidade offers another way to spend time outdoors. The approximately 20-hectare park includes a lake, the Ribeira de Couros watercourse, fitness circuits with equipment and a cycle path. Whether you are more interested in culture and history, crafts and cuisine, or trails and landscapes, these highlights can help you plan your stay and choose a hotel.
