Guimarães between UNESCO World Heritage and city history
Accommodation in Guimarães
Guimarães brings together a UNESCO World Heritage site, museums and different ways to explore the city’s history. This provides a clear cultural and historical focus for planning your trip: the historic centre is shaped by medieval walls, winding lanes and welcoming squares. There is also a part of the World Heritage site beyond the walls, historic buildings and activities you can take part in yourself.
Historic Centre and Couros Zone
The historic centre of Guimarães has been a UNESCO World Heritage site since 2001. Its walls, lanes and squares give it a medieval atmosphere. If you are interested in the city’s history, this is a starting point for exploring its historic spaces and the city’s different themes.
The UNESCO World Heritage site also includes the Couros Zone, an area beyond the walls. Couros is an industrial district whose name refers to the traditional craft of leather tanning. This area adds another historical dimension to Guimarães: alongside walls and lanes, the importance of a craft takes centre stage here. The name Couros directly reflects its connection to leatherworking.
Castle, Residence and Museum
Guimarães Castle was founded in the second half of the 10th century by Countess Mumadona Dias. Its keep houses an interpretation centre dedicated to the building and its history. This makes it possible to focus your visit on the castle itself: its origins belong to a much earlier period than the history of the Paço dos Duques.
The Paço dos Duques began as a grand residence in the 15th century for D. Afonso and D. Constança, the Dukes of Braganza. The palace museum displays rooms that served as the dukes’ residence in the 15th century, as well as an art collection dating mainly from the 17th and 18th centuries. These periods offer different points of focus: the rooms take you back to the residence’s original purpose, while the collection represents mainly later centuries.
Another museum visit can turn your attention to a distinctive exhibition theme: the Museu de Alberto Sampaio is the only museum in Portugal whose permanent exhibition includes a gallery dedicated to fresco painting. If you want to include art and historic spaces in your travel plans, you can choose between different museum and architectural themes.
Experience and Shape the City’s History
Afonso 360 offers a virtual reality depiction of the Battle of São Mamede. The experience takes place at Guimarães Castle or next to the Paço dos Duques de Bragança. If you are interested, check the latest information about the location and reservations before your visit.
The “eco-historical bicycle” tour takes you through the historic streets and lanes of Guimarães. You can choose between a standard bicycle and an electric bicycle. The choice described is about the bicycle; the tour combines physical activity with the historic cityscape, without promising different routes for the two bicycle options.
At a ceramics workshop, participants learn the basics of ceramics and make an object of their own. The Bordado de Guimarães workshop has a different focus: participants learn embroidery techniques, create an embroidery of their own and take it home as a personalised souvenir. Both activities offer a hands-on experience, but use different materials and result in different creations.
The Caminho de Torres also passes through the UNESCO World Heritage site in the historic centre. For travellers interested in pilgrimage routes, it offers another perspective on the same historic urban area.
Putting Green Spaces and Getting There into Context
Parque de Lazer da Cidade covers around 20 hectares and has landscaped and restored footpaths. It offers a different focus from museums and historic buildings: here, the park and its paths take centre stage. The approximate area gives an indication of its size, but does not specify a walking time or a particular route length.
Guimarães is about a 30-minute drive from Porto via the A3 and A7 motorways. Travel time may vary depending on traffic. This gives you a practical indication of how to get there from Porto, while the city itself offers something for a range of cultural interests, including its World Heritage site, historic buildings, museums, hands-on activities and park paths.
