Braga: Cathedral, Monastery and Archaeological Traces
Accommodation in Braga
Braga can be explored through very different layers of history: Baroque monastery and residential architecture, a cathedral with Romanesque, Gothic and Baroque elements, as well as Roman and pre-Roman traces. There are also routes of varying lengths and places by the river. When planning your trip, you can consider culture, archaeological evidence and routes as different aspects of the destination, rather than combining them into a single sightseeing itinerary.
Architecture between monastery, residence and cathedral
In the 17th and 18th centuries, the Mosteiro de São Martinho de Tibães developed into one of Portugal’s largest Baroque monastic complexes. The Palácio dos Biscainhos offers a different architectural perspective: it is a remarkable example of Portuguese residential architecture, whose development spans the 17th and 18th centuries and extends into the 19th century. In Braga, you can therefore encounter both a large Baroque monastic complex and an example of residential architecture with a longer historical arc.
The Museu dos Biscainhos includes gardens where 18th-century architecture and sculpture are especially prominent. Together with the Palácio dos Biscainhos, they offer a distinctive perspective on residential architecture and garden art. The Sé Primacial de Braga adds a sacred and, at the same time, multifaceted dimension: it is Portugal’s oldest cathedral. Its façades and walls feature Romanesque and Gothic styles; Baroque architecture predominates inside. The cathedral also has five chapels and two cloisters. The changing styles can thus be understood through different parts of the same building.
Archaeological traces and early history
The archaeological evidence also varies considerably in form and date. The Fonte do Ídolo is a pre-Roman rock sanctuary in Braga’s historic centre. It features two figures carved in relief and Latin inscriptions naming Nabia and Tongoenabiago as venerated deities. By contrast, the Domus da Escola Velha da Sé preserves the remains of a Roman house built in the Italic tradition. The thermal complex at Alto da Cividade included cold, tepid and hot bathing rooms. These examples take you from an inscribed sanctuary to Roman domestic life and on to the different rooms of a bathing complex.
The Mamoa de Lamas adds a much older funerary monument: it was built around 5,000 years ago. This approximate date places the monument in a prehistoric period, while the domus and thermal complex reflect Roman building traditions. Those interested in the history of the area will therefore find different kinds of evidence here and need not focus solely on church architecture.
Routes, high points and waterside landscapes
Bom Jesus do Monte combines several striking architectural features: its staircase has more than 500 steps and is lined with Baroque fountains and statues. The complex also includes a water-powered funicular, considered the first of its kind on the Iberian Peninsula. The Santuário da Nossa Senhora do Sameiro is a Neoclassical sanctuary and, at 572 metres, is located at the highest point in the city of Braga.
The Via Mariana Luso-Galaica starts at Sameiro; its total length is 382 kilometres, divided into 18 stages. The Caminho de São Rosendo e da Rainha Santa covers a different scale: it runs for approximately 20 kilometres within the municipality of Braga. These figures reflect differences in both the routes’ length and their geographical scope. As route details may change, it is advisable to check the current route before planning.
On the River Cávado, you’ll find Praia Fluvial de Cavadinho – Crespos. It is part of the Ecovia do Cávado e Homem and is surrounded by a natural landscape with numerous shaded spots. Praia Fluvial de Ponte do Bico – Palmeira is served by TUB routes 45 and 945 and has a bicycle rack. It has held Blue Flag status since 2022 and the Praia AcessĂvel award since 2021; it is advisable to check these awards again for future seasons. Before travelling there, it is also worth checking the latest bus timetable.
