If you want to combine a hotel stay with regional heritage, walking trails and scenery, Cantelães offers several different points of interest. These include the pilgrimage to Nossa Senhora da Fé, the PR3 and PR4 walking trails, archaeological sites and historic buildings. They offer different ways to discover Cantelães as a destination, depending on whether you are interested in history, a walk or the landscape.

Heritage among chapels and archaeological sites

The parish church of Cantelães is dedicated to Saint Stephen, Santo Estêvão. The Capela de Santo Amaro e S. Roque is a 16th-century chapel. Another religious building is the Capela de Nossa Senhora da Fé, with its elaborately decorated Baroque main façade. The Nossa Senhora da Fé sanctuary dates back to the late 18th century. These different dates can be distinguished when exploring the local heritage, rather than attributing them to a single period of construction.

The Ponte de São Pedro also offers a specific architectural detail: the bridge crosses the Ribeira de Cantelães and has a round arch with a span of approximately five metres. The Castro-Castelo de Vieira combines archaeological history with a view over the present-day town of Vieira do Minho. It is located in Cantelães and was inhabited from the Iron Age through the Middle Ages. Excavations there uncovered three concentric defensive walls and round or rectangular building structures. Nearby, in the surroundings of Cantelães, is also Castro de Vila Seca, with remains of the castreja culture.

Pilgrimage to Nossa Senhora da Fé

A religious pilgrimage takes place at the Nossa Senhora da Fé sanctuary every year on the first Sunday in June. It includes a walk of about five kilometres up to the hilltop of Monte de Cantelães and traditionally ends with a shared meal in the area around the sanctuary. If you want to plan your trip around this tradition, take note of the annual date and check the date for the year in question.

The sanctuary grounds include two bandstands, a spring and a large cross visible from Vieira do Minho. The pilgrimage and the features of the grounds are distinct aspects of the place: the first Sunday in June marks the recurring event, while the bandstands, spring and cross describe the grounds.

Two walking trails, different route descriptions

The PR4 VRM – Percurso do Turio is a circular route of about 10.5 kilometres. It runs mostly through the Turio woodland and along watercourses. From Vieira do Minho, the trail can be reached via Cantelães on the EM 526. The PR3 VRM – Cabeço da Vaca is also described as a circular route of about 10.5 kilometres, starting and ending in Serradela. Its description highlights views of the Serra da Cabreira and Gerês.

The two routes therefore offer points of comparison, although their descriptions focus on different details: the PR4 highlights woodland and watercourses, while the PR3 emphasizes the views and its named start and end point. Check local trail conditions before setting out. This will help you take the stated route features and approximate distance into account when planning.

Landscape, water and Garrano horses

More than 300 Garrano horses, a semi-wild breed that grazes freely, can be seen in Cantelães throughout the year. Watercourses also shape the landscape: the Ribeira de Cantelães is fed by the Campainhas and Turio streams, while Cortiço and Meães rise in the Serra de Cantelães. There are numerous veigas along the Ribeira, in a floodplain with soils suitable for farming. Together, these details paint a picture of watercourses, agricultural land and free-roaming horses.

Another viewpoint is the Cantelães panoramic swing. It is located in Pioneiros, within the parish boundaries of Cantelães, at an altitude of 875 metres. A signposted access route leads from Vieira do Minho to Miradouro dos Pioneiros, where the swing is installed. As local conditions may change, check the route before setting out. For a different view of the surroundings, Castro-Castelo de Vieira offers a natural viewpoint over the present-day town of Vieira do Minho.
