Celorico de Basto lies between the mountain ranges of Marão and Alvão and the Tâmega Valley. Romanesque buildings, walking and cycling trails, and the Basto wine sub-region offer different ways to shape a trip. By planning their days, visitors can combine architectural history, outdoor activities and regional wine culture.

Romanesque Architecture and Historic Buildings

Castelo de Arnoia is a Romanesque castle. Its features include a keep, a square defensive tower, a single doorway and a cistern. Castelo de Arnóia can be reached via the E.N. 101-4 from Celorico de Basto in the direction of Felgueiras; a footpath leads from Aldeia do Castelo to the monument. Aldeia do Castelo is the former Villa de Basto.

The churches also reflect different building histories. Igreja de Santa Maria de Veade was built in the 13th century and extensively altered in the 18th century. At Igreja do Salvador de Fervença, the surviving Romanesque features point to the second quarter of the 13th century. These include exterior buttresses; the church also preserves a vaulted Romanesque main apse. The later alterations at Veade and the surviving Romanesque features at Fervença thus offer contrasting historical highlights.

In Ribas, architecture is linked to a tradition: according to local tradition, Canons Regular of Saint Augustine founded a small monastery there. Igreja do Salvador de Ribas features bead motifs inside and out. A significant campaign of mural paintings was discovered behind the main altar. Other protected buildings include Pelourinho do Castelo, which is classified as a Property of Public Interest.

Casa do Outeiro in Veade was built in the 16th century and rebuilt in 1860 after a fire had almost destroyed it. In Outeiro, Veade, Casa da Boavista and its garden are classified as a Property of Public Interest. Solar do Souto, including its gardens and quinta in Vilar, Basto (S. Clemente), is classified as a Monument of Public Interest. Celorico de Basto also has numerous manor houses and typical gardens of the Basto region, laid out in geometric patterns and lushly planted with camellias.

Landscape and Views

Its location between Marão, Alvão and the Tâmega Valley shapes the landscape of Celorico de Basto. The riverbank area along the Rio Freixieiro is a place for recreation and leisure. The Miradouro do Calvelo offers views over the Terras de Basto. The riverbank and viewpoint provide different settings for spending time outdoors.

Cycling and Walking Trails

The Ecopista do Tâmega is intended for pedestrians and cyclists. It is an easy, accessible route with a very gentle gradient, running 17 kilometres north from Celorico de Basto to Arco de Baúlhe railway station. The PR2 offers a different kind of route: it is a short, signposted circular walking trail in Celorico de Basto. Points of interest along the way are marked with descriptive information. Those who prefer a linear route with a clear direction can compare the Ecopista with the short circular trail before planning their day.

Wine and Camellias

The Basto wine sub-region includes Cabeceiras de Basto, Celorico de Basto, Mondim de Basto and Ribeira de Pena. The Azal grape variety reaches its greatest potential there, producing wines with aromas of lemon and green apple. Vinho Verde is produced on the sunny slopes of the Tâmega. The Verde Sentido enogastronomic route also includes Celorico de Basto. This regional perspective adds a distinct focus to trip planning alongside the buildings and trails.

Camellias are a defining feature of the typical gardens of the Basto region. The Festa Internacional das Camélias takes place on the third weekend of March and includes a camellia exhibition and a camellia competition. If you would like to plan your trip around the festival, check the exact event date in advance.
