The different themes offer practical starting points for matching your search to your interests.

The Geira and archaeological heritage

The section of the Via XVIII, also known as the Geira, runs through Terras de Bouro between Roman milestones XIV and XXXIV and is classified as a National Monument. The Portuguese section of the Geira crosses Peneda-Gerês National Park. It is associated with 140 catalogued milestones, 102 of which remain in place. The Geira Museum has four themed rooms, an auditorium and spaces for archaeological studies.

From the border at Portela do Homem, a one-kilometre footpath along the Geira leads to Ponte de São Miguel. Roman masonry survives at the beginning of the bridge. As trail conditions may change, it is advisable to check them before visiting.

Villages, crafts and traditions

São Bento da Porta Aberta brings together two notable dates in its history: devotion began with the construction of a small chapel in 1614; the sanctuary was granted basilica status in April 2015. In Brufe, granite buildings, granaries, threshing floors, drying houses and watermills are part of the rural mountain heritage. Aldeia de Cutelo also preserves granite houses and traditional structures, including granaries, threshing floors, drying houses, watermills and the São Domingos Chapel.

Traditions linked to the agricultural and livestock calendar are preserved in Aldeia da Ermida. The ATACE association promotes the tradition of the Vezeira there. At the Centro de Artes Tradicionais in Seixo, also known as Pedras Brancas, items made on traditional looms, linen goods, and basketry and woodwork are produced and sold. Opening hours and sales arrangements may change; check visiting options in advance.

Museums and regional cooking methods also offer distinctive experiences. The Ethnographic Museum of Vilarinho da Furna preserves the agricultural, communal, domestic and rural heritage of the village’s residents. To make Chanfana, pieces of meat are marinated with garlic and then slow-cooked for a long time.

Forest, mountains and waterfall

A large part of the municipality of Terras de Bouro lies within Peneda-Gerês National Park. Mata de Albergaria is one of the park’s most representative Galician-Portuguese oak forests and is part of the Matas de Palheiros e Albergaria Biogenetic Reserve. Serra Amarela rises to 1,361 metres and is the ninth-highest elevation on mainland Portugal. From Miradouro das Rocas, the 360-degree view stretches across the peaks of Serra do Gerês.

Cascata do Arado lies at an altitude of around 900 metres and forms a series of cascades among the rocks. It is accessible by car: the last kilometre follows an unpaved road to the bridge over the Arado River; stone steps then lead to a small viewpoint. Check road access conditions before setting out.

Water landscapes and activities

Praia de Alqueirão is on the shore of the Albufeira da Caniçada, beyond the bridge between Rio Caldo and Vila do Gerês. Companies offer water sports activities at Praia Fluvial do Alqueirão. Albufeira da Caniçada has a navigable area of 689 hectares, as well as services and suitable conditions for a range of water sports activities. The activities available may change.

The Vilarinho das Furnas reservoir covers an area of 346 hectares; fishing and swimming are permitted there as leisure activities. Check the current reservoir rules before taking part. This helps distinguish water activities from the cultural and landscape highlights of the trip, without treating the two lakes as the same.

Exhibitions and planning your visit

Porta do Campo do Gerês has an exhibition about the region and the natural and cultural values of the National Park, as well as walking trails. It also develops environmental education activities for schools, institutions and other groups. Visitor rules and programme availability may change; check the latest visiting information in advance.
