Carvalheira offers travelers hiking routes, historic buildings, and a landscape shaped by waterways and woodland. Specific highlights include the PR15 hiking trail, a Roman road, religious sites, and viewpoints. If you would like to include hiking and heritage in your travel plans, you’ll find both geographical points of interest and building and festival traditions here.

Hiking and Landscape

The PR15 Bom Jesus do Monte das Mós hiking trail connects Campo do Gerês, Covide, and Carvalheira. Carvalheira’s landscape is characterized by the slopes on the left bank of the Homem River and, to the right, the Ribeira Rodas. Willow trees and oaks define these slopes. The hiking trail therefore links three places, while the landscape is described through its slopes, waterways, and woodland.

Ponte Porta Santo is located on the Ribeira Rodas stream, at the boundary between the parishes of Carvalheira and Covide. The Poço Macho pool is also found there. The bridge, stream, and pool are thus connected at this boundary point. Along with the Homem River and the wooded or willow-lined slopes, these provide several specific points of interest in Carvalheira’s landscape.

Roman Road and Bom Jesus das Mós

The Via XVIII, also known as the Geira or Via Nova, is a Roman road designated a National Monument. It is also referred to as the Via XVIII of the Itinerarium Antonini. Its section in the municipality of Terras de Bouro passes through Carvalheira. These different names refer to the same road and form part of its historical significance.

Another landmark is the Bom Jesus das Mós Monument. Construction began in 1902, and it was solemnly inaugurated on July 13, 1913. The monument is dedicated to the Sacred Heart of Jesus and resembles a medieval castle tower on a rocky outcrop. Its precise chronology and distinctive architectural form give the site a unique cultural and historical character.

Churches, Chapels, and Paredes

The Igreja Matriz de Carvalheira is dedicated to Saint São Paio. Its main chapel is tiled, and there are paintings inside the church. The dedication and decoration are distinct features of the building: the dedication refers to São Paio, while the tiles and paintings make up its stated decorative elements.

The Ermida de São Caetano dates from 1590. A chapel dedicated to the Heart of Mary stands on Alto das Mós. Paredes is designated a traditional village and part of Carvalheira’s historical and cultural heritage. These details cover different forms of heritage: a dated hermitage, a chapel with a named location, and a village designated as traditional.

São Paio Festivities in June

Carvalheira’s São Paio festivities take place in June. If you would like to plan your trip around this event, check the dates in advance. June is the stated month for the festivities and can serve as a reference point for your plans.

The Original Monument and the New Viewpoint

For decades, the original Bom Jesus das Mós Monument served as a viewpoint over the Homem River valley. A new viewpoint with a metal-and-glass structure has also been built. These details refer to distinct features: the former viewpoint function belongs to the original monument, while the material description applies to the new viewpoint. This distinguishes the two structures and their respective relationships to the landscape.
