Fafe: Reservoir, Culture and Hiking Trails
Accommodation in Fafe
The Albufeira da Queimadela is an 11-hectare reservoir fed by the Vizela River. At the Barragem da Queimadela, the PR4 Trilho Verde da Marginal circles the water and passes through forests, woodland and rural paths. Short hiking trails are also among the options at the dam. If you would like to canoe there, check the local operating conditions in advance.
Hiking Trails and Cycling Routes
There are more than ten signposted short PR hiking trails in the municipality of Fafe. A longer option is the Grande Rota do Património e do Ambiente das Terras Altas de Fafe, a 50-kilometre circular hiking trail. For cycling, consider the 30-kilometre Percurso Ciclável Eco Sport, which you can do independently or with a guide. This gives you a choice of different formats: shorter hikes, a long circular walk and a dedicated cycling route.
Architecture and Historic Sites
The Teatro Cinema de Fafe was built in 1923 and is considered an important cultural and architectural landmark of the city. In Arões, the Igreja Românica de Arões is the only national monument in the MunicĂpio de Fafe. An inscription on the side portal gives 22 March 1237 as the date the church was consecrated. The Castro de Santo OvĂdio was classified as an ImĂłvel de Interesse PĂşblico in 1980 and is located about one kilometre from Fafe city centre.
Museums and Local Stories
The Museu do Rali combines a permanent exhibition with temporary and travelling exhibitions, including displays on Fafe e o Rali de Portugal. It features 25 rally cars. The Museu das Migrações e das Comunidades focuses on researching, preserving and sharing the material and symbolic expressions of migration, particularly the return of Portuguese emigrants.
The Museu da Imprensa preserves typesetting, printing and finishing machinery and equipment from the former Fafe newspapers O Desforço, founded in 1892, and Almanaque Ilustrado de Fafe, founded in 1909. A printing press dating from 1885 is a particular highlight. The Estação Memória is housed in a converted warehouse at the former Fafe railway station. The interpretation museum commemorates the Guimarães–Fafe railway line, which closed in 1986. At the Museu da Palha in Golães, visitors can weave a traditional Trança de Repique in the Entrança tu area.
Viewpoints and Landscapes
From the Miradouro de SĂŁo Salvador, panoramic views extend across the entire MunicĂpio de Fafe and towards Monte de Santa Catarina, also known as Penha, in GuimarĂŁes and Monte de Santa QuitĂ©ria in Felgueiras. The viewpoint has a landscaped recreational park with tables, barbecue facilities and a bar with an outdoor terrace. Casa do Penedo is located in the Serras de Fafe and was designed to blend completely into the landscape.
The Miradouro de Santa Marinha is on Monte de Santa Marinha in the Freguesia of Freitas and is also known as Baloiço 440 O Amor Que Nos Une. The grounds, surrounded by vegetation, include a picnic area near a chapel dedicated to Santa Marinha. Together, Fafe’s viewpoints offer different vistas and facilities as part of the area’s landscape experiences.
Cuisine and Rural Traditions
Vitela assada Ă moda de Fafe has been a typical speciality of Fafe’s cuisine since at least the 19th century. The city’s best restaurants cook it in a wood-fired oven, cut it into pieces and serve it with potatoes and regional Vinho Verde. Rural building and craft traditions can also be discovered at specific sites: the Lagar de Azeite, also known as Engenho de Recovelas, in Ribeiros is an example of rural architecture and is connected with Fafe’s rural traditions. The Moinho de Casca de Carvalho in Aboim illustrates the former extraction of oak bark; the village is also home to a unique windmill built in the early 20th century. Jogo do Pau is still practised in the MunicĂpio de Fafe as a sport, but above all as a reenactment tradition.
