Fafe: Museums, Rallying and Trails
Accommodation in Fafe
Fafe brings together several travel themes: rallying, the history of printing and migration, architecture, and cycling and walking trails. There is also the Albufeira da Queimadela and the activities available in its surroundings. If you are looking for a hotel in Fafe, these different highlights can help you tailor your stay to your interests.
Getting there and getting around the municipality
For travel by road, the A7 is a useful reference point. It connects Fafe with Braga, 42 km away, or about 34 minutes by car, and Porto, 68 km away, or about 52 minutes by car. These distances and approximate journey times give you two reference points for placing Fafe within a trip around the region.
For cyclists, the shared-use Pista de Cicloturismo is 15.4 km long. Of this, 8.3 km run through the municipality of Fafe and 7.1 km through the municipality of Guimarães. The route’s total length and the section within the municipality of Fafe are therefore two different figures. At intersections, cyclists have priority over crossing traffic.
There are also different options for walking. The municipality of Fafe has more than a dozen marked PR trails, with several levels of difficulty. A different scale is offered by the 50 km Grande Rota do Património e do Ambiente das Terras Altas de Fafe. This Grande Rota (GR) circular trail is divided into three stages: from Várzea Cova to Mós, from Mós to Pontido, and from Pontido back to Várzea Cova. This lets you distinguish between a network of marked trails with different levels of difficulty and a clearly described circular route divided into stages for a multi-day walk.
Waterside scenery and time outdoors
The Albufeira da Queimadela is an 11-hectare reservoir supplied by the River Vizela. Its surroundings include a river beach and picnic areas, as well as opportunities for environmentally friendly water sports. When planning your stay, you can consider both the waterside activities and the distinct cultural themes of the museums and buildings.
Museums: rallying, printing and migration
Estação Memória is an interpretive museum about Fafe’s history, traditions and natural environment. The Museu do Rali focuses on motorsport: its exhibition includes 25 rally cars. It also features racing suits, helmets, miniatures and specialist motorsport magazines, as well as posters and notices about drivers and brands. Those interested in rallying will find not only vehicles here, but also a range of objects from the world of motorsport.
The Museu da Imprensa de Fafe offers a different perspective on history. Its collection includes equipment used to produce, print and finish the former local newspapers “O Desforço”, founded in 1892, and “Almanaque Ilustrado de Fafe”, founded in 1909, as well as printing engravings. An 1885 printing press and other machines illustrate the development of typographic work from manual to mechanical typesetting. The newspapers and technical equipment mentioned here reveal different aspects of printing history: both the earlier publications and the tools used to produce them.
The Museu das Migrações e das Comunidades explores Portuguese emigration to Brazil in the 19th century and the first decades of the 20th century, as well as emigration to European countries in the second half of the 20th century. The periods and destinations covered give the topic a clear chronological structure.
Architecture and the cityscape
The fully restored Teatro Cinema de Fafe is an architectural landmark and a cultural symbol of the city, dating from 1923. Fafe’s urban character also includes palatial houses in the Brazilian style, built by emigrants who returned home. These buildings complement the museums’ themes with a perspective on the city’s architecture: the Teatro Cinema represents a cultural building with a specific date, while the houses are a reminder of the influence returning emigrants had on the cityscape.
Whether you would rather focus on collections, architecture, cycling, walking or the area around the Albufeira da Queimadela, Fafe offers several distinct themes to help you plan your stay.
