Haute-Vienne: Landscapes, Heritage and Cycle Routes
Accommodation in Haute-Vienne
Mont Gargan opens up panoramic views of the Millevaches Plateau, the Monédières Massif and the Auvergne mountains. With its nature reserves, waterways and cultural sites, Haute-Vienne reveals many different sides—from quiet landscapes to places where history and contemporary art meet.
Views, wetlands and water
At 731 metres, Mont Gargan is located in the Parc naturel régional de Millevaches en Limousin. The view takes in several vast landscapes: the Millevaches Plateau, the Monédières and the Auvergne mountains. For those interested in natural areas, the Tourbière des Dauges is another notable destination. The national nature reserve is home to more than 2,600 animal and plant species, including 127 protected species in France. Two trails, 2 and 5 kilometres long, lead through the area.
At Étang de la Pouge, water and nature watching come together: the pond covers 28 hectares and has an ornithological observatory. Fishing spots are accessible in the downstream section. The Forêt des Vaseix offers a different landscape, with 104 hectares of coniferous and deciduous woodland. Traces of a Roman road that linked Lyon with the Atlantic coast can also be found among the trees.
Culture, remembrance and history
At the Châlucet-Ligoure site, a 7-kilometre circular trail links ten information panels around the Ligoure estate. Châlucet can be explored free of charge and independently throughout the year; a puzzle trail and augmented reality add to the visit. It is a chance to enjoy the grounds while discovering the site in a playful way.
The Musée d'art contemporain de la Haute-Vienne – Château de Rochechouart brings together architecture, heritage and contemporary art. Site-specific works are on display indoors and outdoors. The porcelain tradition is also part of Haute-Vienne’s cultural identity, dating back to the 18th century. For a different historical perspective, Oradour-sur-Glane preserves traces of the massacre of its population on 10 June 1944. The Centre de la mémoire d'Oradour is the only access point to the ruins of the martyred village and offers guided visits.
Activities and routes
The activities available at Lac de Saint-Pardoux vary by location. Santrop has a swimming pool and accrobranche (treetop adventure course); in Chabannes, visitors can enjoy water sports, mountain bike hire and archery. This means there are different kinds of leisure activities to choose from around the same lake.
Cycling trips and walking excursions can also be planned around specific routes. The department’s 2025 activity report names the Saint-Jacques à vélo V56 and the Vélidéale V93 as national cycle routes that cross Haute-Vienne. The Voie verte des Hauts de Tardoire follows a former railway line and offers a comfortable, easy route for walking and cycling. It is connected to the Route Richard Cœur de Lion and can be reached from the Vélidéale along part of that route. The different lengths of the trails in the Dauges and the circular trail near Châlucet-Ligoure also provide a practical guide for choosing excursions by distance.
