Saint-Julien-Le-Petit offers several ways to enjoy a stay: circular walks and longer routes, swimming opportunities along the Maulde, as well as distinctive buildings and local heritage sites. The routes vary in length, difficulty and walking time. This lets you consider in advance how much time and physical effort best suit your plans.

Hiking routes around Saint-Julien-Le-Petit

The Boucle de Sainte-Geneviève is a moderately difficult circular walk covering 10.5 kilometres. It is marked in yellow and is described as taking around 2 hours and 30 minutes on foot. Along the way, it passes a spring on Mont Sainte-Geneviève. It is advisable to check local trail conditions before setting out.

The Boucle du Mont Larron is also moderately difficult. It starts in Saint-Julien-Le-Petit and covers 16.4 kilometres. This makes it the longer of the two circular walks described; in contrast, an approximate walking time is specified for the Boucle de Sainte-Geneviève. The route on Mont Larron passes through the Maulde valley and offers views of Mont Larron and the mountains and hills of the Limousin.

The Circuit de Saint-Julien runs through the Maulde valley and through villages and hamlets, with numerous viewpoints along the way. For a longer crossing, a difficult 22.9-kilometre GRP® route leads to Lac de Vassivière at Auphelle. It is estimated to take around six hours. It starts at Place de l’Église in Saint-Julien-Le-Petit and ends at Plage d’Auphelle. These details make it possible to compare the length of the crossing with the shorter circular walks.

At 624 metres, Mont Larron is the highest point in the commune. It is also a prominent landmark on the described Boucle du Mont Larron, which offers views of the mountain and the surrounding hills.

Church, dam and local heritage

The parish church of Saint-Julien was built around 1200. It was partially rebuilt in the 15th century and repaired in the 18th century using materials from the demolished chapel of Montlaron. The “Arbre aux poules” is another piece of local heritage: this remarkable oak stands at a crossroads at an altitude of 547 metres and is considered part of Saint-Julien-Le-Petit’s heritage because of its size and age.

The Barrage du Mont-Larron also has a clearly defined construction history. The concrete arch dam was built between 1951 and 1953 and came into operation in 1953. The church and dam therefore represent different periods and purposes of construction; the oak complements these historical and cultural landmarks as a natural monument.
