Saint-Martial-sur-Isop lies in a landscape of hills, forests, streams and meadows. Two specific points of interest provide a good starting point for planning your trip: the Rochers de l’Isop, with their circular trail and geology, and the crypt beneath Saint-Martial Church. The trail starts in the village; the crypt is a separate highlight of the area’s religious heritage.

Landscape and the Rochers de l’Isop

The Isop is a stream about 20 kilometres long that flows into the Blourde. It runs along the foot of the villages of Saint-Martial and Saint-Barbant. For orientation, it is worth distinguishing the stream from the Rochers de l’Isop trail: the trail starts in Saint-Martial-sur-Isop and forms a loop, while the Isop refers to the watercourse.

The rocks at the Rochers de l’Isop were formed through a slow process of spheroidal weathering. Mechanical and chemical erosion exposed resistant cores of rock. The shape of the landform is also linked to the course of the river: the Isop carved a passage through a diorite massif. Thus, the Rochers are notable both for the weathering of the rocks and for the course of the stream. The Rochers de l’Isop have been listed as a protected natural site since 1989.

To travel from Limoges to the Rochers de l’Isop by road, the route follows the RN141, the RD9 and the RD675, then the RD4 to Saint-Martial. Before setting out, check whether roadworks or closures could affect your journey. The description of the route as a loop indicates its shape; by itself, it says nothing about walking time or trail conditions.

Church, crypt and historical features

The crypt beneath Saint-Martial Church is one of six religious buildings with a crypt in the Haute-Vienne département. It is accessible via a stone staircase. A spring inside the crypt was used to baptise believers. This site therefore combines architectural distinction with religious use.

During excavations in 2004, a rounded pit set into soft stone was discovered in the crypt. Clear water welled up continuously at its bottom. The description of the find records both its shape and location, as well as the water; the year refers to the excavations.

Protected objects in the church are also part of the local cultural heritage. The memorial to those who fell in the First World War, from 1914 to 1918, is classified as a protected object. The statue of Saint Leonard in Saint-Martial parish church is also protected. To find out whether the statue can be seen during your visit, it is best to ask locally.

Another historical feature is the entrance to the Grotte du Prussien, which is still visible. Local access conditions may vary; check access arrangements before visiting.
