Saint-Just-Le-Martel lies 12 km east of Limoges. When looking for a hotel, you can first consider which aspect of the destination you want to shape your stay: history and caricature, a shorter walk or a longer excursion. The church of Saint-Just, the Espace Loup and the signposted trails along the Vienne and through the countryside offer concrete points of reference.

Church and caricature culture

The church of Saint-Just dates from the 12th and 13th centuries and has a bell-gable typical of the Limousin. It also houses a reliquary monstrance from 1644 containing relics of Saint Justus. The building thus brings together two distinct periods: a medieval church and a religious object from the 17th century.

Another cultural attraction is the Espace Loup. It is an exhibition venue for the International Centre for Caricature, Press Cartoons and Humour, and has a large event hall. The Centre International has been based there since 2011 and serves as a venue for exhibitions, resources, information and training.

The Festival international de la caricature et du dessin de presse et d’humour has been held every year at the Espace Loup since 1982: during the last week of September and the first week of October. If you want to plan your trip around this period, check the event calendar in advance for the current edition.

The annual Salon International de la Caricature, du Dessin de Presse et d’Humour brings together 200 cartoonists from every continent. More than 30 exhibitions are on display over ten days. These figures give culture enthusiasts a concrete idea of what makes this event distinctive.

Trails and landscape

The hiking trails vary in length and listed walking times. On the Sentier du Loup, you can choose between a main route of 1.95 km and a short alternative of 1.02 km. The longer route is listed as taking about one hour and 30 minutes. These two distances provide a clear guide when deciding whether to fit a shorter or longer route into your day.

The Sentier de la Sorcière is 4.96 km long and has a listed duration of three hours. It follows the banks of the Vienne and invites you to look for a menhir. The route combines a specific time estimate with something to look out for along the way.

The Sentier Vienne et Forêt is listed as 14 km long, with 320 m of elevation gain and a duration of three hours and 15 minutes. The route passes through the forest and along the Vienne; viewpoints offer views of the river, the Limousin landscape and the Monts d’Ambazac. For planning purposes, compare the approximately 90 minutes for the longer Loup route with the three hours for the Sorcière and the three hours and 15 minutes for this route.

The Sentier des Villages is listed as 25 km long, with 300 m of elevation gain and a duration of five hours. You can explore it on foot, on horseback or by bicycle. The route offers views of the villages in the municipality of Saint-Just-Le-Martel, as well as wayside crosses, bocage countryside, ponds and viewpoints. Its range of ways to travel and landscapes sets it apart from the shorter trails described with specific alternatives.

Another option is the Sentier des Dragonniers: this 2.06 km adventure trail takes about an hour and a half and heads towards the equestrian centre. You may encounter dragons along the way. Saint-Just-Le-Martel’s many signposted trails also reveal varied landscapes and monuments, including the Rocher du Diable. The Vienne and the Chèze stream shape the green, natural surroundings enjoyed by residents and walkers.
