Saint-Auvent: Nature, Trails and Heritage
Accommodation in Saint-Auvent
Saint-Auvent combines nature observation, hiking opportunities, historic sites and insights into regional culture.
Nature at the Étang de la Pouge
The 36-hectare Étang de la Pouge is part of the Natura 2000 network. An interpretive trail by the pond explores local flora and fauna; the birdwatching observatory is open year-round. The walking trail is accessible to people with reduced mobility and to people with intellectual or hearing disabilities. There is also a fishing platform equipped for wheelchair users. Check the condition of the facilities and local conditions before your visit.
Hiking Trails and Outdoor Activities
The Histoire et Nature loop starts in Saint-Auvent, is easy and 3.8 kilometres long. The Uni’Vert Trail No. 3 Via Agrippa also starts there, is 11.5 kilometres long and is classified as a difficult loop. The two hiking options therefore differ in both distance and stated difficulty. Check local trail conditions before setting out.
The Via Agrippa can be accessed at the exit from Saint-Auvent towards Rochechouart, at the first bend on the D58; it leads to the Gorre and Gorret gorges. Another activity is the five-kilometre Tèrra Aventura geocaching trail, Le nouveau défi de la Perinqueta, which runs alongside the water.
Heritage and Occitan Culture
The Château de Saint-Auvent dates from the 12th, 17th and 18th centuries and is listed as a historic monument. Each year, it also hosts artistic gatherings featuring contemporary artworks and is open to a broad public. If you would like to plan a visit to one of these gatherings, check the current dates.
At the Dolmen de Chez Moutaud site, an imposing dolmen and a menhir stand a few dozen metres apart. Both are considered evidence of human settlement in the Neolithic period. The site has been classified as a historic monument since 6 February 1940. The Pont et Moulin de Lascaux ensemble also has protected status: it has been listed in the register of historic monuments since 20 June 2011. The GR 48 follows the route past the ensemble.
In the church of Saint-Auvent, a crypt opens at the foot of the choir steps. The Sanctuaire Notre-Dame-de-la-Paix is known as “Little Lourdes in the Limousin.” The Maison de Païs introduces visitors to Occitan culture and its traditions.
Farm Visits and Sheep’s Milk Cheese
Les P'tites Mains pour Demain offers farm visits and animal feeding for groups, families and friends. Some activities require a reservation. By appointment, it also offers nature discovery and environmental education workshops. Alongside trails and cultural sites, the programme therefore includes activities related to agriculture and the environment.
La Grange du Noir produces fresh and aged raw sheep’s milk cheeses. These include plain and flavoured varieties, as well as faisselles, tommes and tommettes. Products are sold directly from the farm; visits to the premises are available by appointment. Check product availability before your visit and arrange visits in advance.
