Châlus combines a clearly defined local history with buildings from different centuries, insights into rural life in the past, and a Voie Verte for outdoor activities. The Tardoire River flows between Châlus’s two historic settlement centres. The Ville-Haute is arranged around the elevated Château de Châlus-Chabrol; the Ville-Basse developed near the Château de Châlus-Maulmont. These two parts give the town a historic setting that you can combine with culture and countryside when planning a stay.

Castles as historic landmarks

The Château de Châlus-Chabrol was built around the 11th century on a rocky outcrop at the initiative of the Viscounts of Limoges, and served to control important routes. On 26 March 1199, Richard Cœur de Lion died at the Château de Châlus-Chabrol—an event in the town’s history with a precise date. The château has reopened to visitors. Check the current access conditions before your visit.

The Ville-Basse developed near the Château de Châlus-Maulmont, which was built around 1280 at the initiative of Géraud de Maulmont. The castle is a stop on the Route Richard Cœur de Lion. The Château de Châlus-Maulmont can be visited by appointment; on Saturdays in July and August, visitors can also drop in from 3 to 6 pm without an appointment. The different dates of construction mark two distinct building phases in the town’s history. Check the current arrangements before visiting.

Sacred architecture and cultural sites

The Église de Lageyrat dates from the 10th century, is dedicated to Saint Étienne, and combines Romanesque and Gothic architecture. The local association Vie Lageyrat maintains the church and opens it to the public. As access arrangements may change, check the current conditions before your visit.

The restored Chapelle Notre Dame de Séchaud hosts exhibitions and cultural events. Individual programmes may vary. If you would like to combine your visit with an event, take the specific dates into account.

Everyday history and outdoor activities

The Écomusée du Pays de Châlus offers insights into local rural life in the 19th and 20th centuries through numerous donated tools, equipment, pieces of furniture and items of clothing. While the castles and church reflect their architectural history, the museum focuses on objects from everyday life. Guided tours are available for groups on request.

The Voie Verte des Hauts de Tardoire runs for 13 kilometres between Châlus and Oradour-sur-Vayres. It is suitable for people with reduced mobility, cyclists, pedestrians and skaters. Alongside visits to historic buildings, this clearly defined route offers another focus for planning your trip. You can explore Châlus through its local history, cultural sites or the Voie Verte, and shape your stay around the themes that interest you most.
