You can get to know Rochechouart through its distinctive geology and architectural history. The astrobleme can be explored through an exhibition and themed trails; the château and churches reveal different chapters in architectural history. When planning your visit, it is worth bearing in mind the specific features of the walks and the market’s opening times.

The astrobleme and its landscape

The Rochechouart-Chassenon astrobleme was formed by a meteorite impact around 210 million years ago. The Réserve Naturelle de l’astroblème Rochechouart-Chassenon is also part of this broader setting: it spans five municipalities in the départements of Haute-Vienne and Charente. So far, it is the only known astrobleme in France and the fifth-largest impact structure in Europe.

The Espace Météorite Paul Pellas has a permanent exhibition on impactism, open year-round. Check the local access conditions before your visit. This allows you to explore the geological subject not only in the landscape but also through an exhibition.

The château and churches: different building periods

The Château de Rochechouart stands on a rocky promontory overlooking the valleys of the Graine and Vayres rivers. Its surviving architectural features from the 13th and 15th centuries include the keep and a Renaissance gallery. Impaktite stones used in the château’s construction create a special connection with the geology: the history of the astrobleme and the building’s history meet here.

The churches also offer different historical reference points. The Église Saint-Sauveur is considered an outstanding example of 11th-century Romanesque art. Its spiral spire was added later, between 1767 and 1774. The Église Saint-Julien, meanwhile, is a former abbey church built in the 11th century by monks from Charroux Abbey in Poitou. It retains much of its original structure.

The cultural attractions also include the Musée d’Art Contemporain in Rochechouart, with more than 300 works of contemporary art. The Musée départemental d’art contemporain de Rochechouart is open to the public on a permanent basis; check the current opening days in advance.

Walks with different points of focus

The Sentier d’interprétation de l’astroblème is a 2 km circular walk around the château and through the town. Five stops explain the meteorite event. If you are looking for a walk with a stated length and informative stops, the route description provides both.

The Circuit de la météorite links Babaudus, the lake and the centre of Rochechouart; along the way, it offers numerous panoramic views. Unlike the Sentier, it focuses on these locations and views, and no length is given for this circuit. This is a useful distinction if you are choosing between a walk with a set distance and a route described in terms of its landscape views.

A Tèrra-Aventura route leads from the Romanesque church, with its twisted spire, to the 13th-century château, connecting contemporary art with the Middle Ages. Check before your trip whether the route is currently available. The “L’Astroquête” geocache also takes you through the historic centre; app availability and route details may change.

The market and time at Plan d’eau

The market in Rochechouart takes place on Friday and Saturday mornings. It offers fruit, vegetables and local products. If you plan to visit, confirm the dates before your trip.

At the Plan d’eau de Boischenu, there is a walking path, a picnic table and play equipment for children. These specific facilities set it apart from the walks and churches described above: here, the focus is on a waterside path and places to take a break. This lets you shape your stay around the things that interest you without conflating the different places and activities.
