Blond: Granite, Megaliths and Heritage
Accommodation in Blond
Blond combines a distinctive granite landscape with prehistoric traces and historic buildings. The municipality is one of the places included in the protected area of the Monts de Blond.
Granite Ridges and Megaliths
The Monts de Blond form a granite range whose main ridge reaches 514 metres at Bachellerie and rises clearly above the surrounding plateaus. These heights give the landscape its distinctive frame. Those interested in geology and landscapes will find a direct link here between rock and terrain: granite shapes the range, while the ridge rises above the neighbouring plateaus.
The megaliths erected by people are also part of the character of the Monts de Blond. The area is considered the richest in the Haute-Vienne département for standing stones and prehistoric remains. The Rochers de Puychaud are large erratic boulders. They symbolically mark the boundary between the langue d’oc and langue d’oïl regions and lie on the Circuit des Mégalithes. A memorial plaque on the rocks pays tribute to Frédéric Mistral.
Church and Notable Rock Sites
The fortified church of Blond is a Romanesque building dating from the 12th century and protected as a historic monument. Its bell tower was converted into a keep at the end of the 16th century. Four elevated buttresses surround the tower and form defensive spaces. This building brings together Romanesque architecture and later fortifications.
Another named landmark on the Circuit des Cîmes is the Rocher de l'Amour. A traditional belief is associated with it: women wishing to have children are said to rub their navel against the stone and make a wish. This is folklore, not a guaranteed effect or an organised activity.
Circular Routes and Hiking
The Circuit des Cîmes starts in Blond and is a 7.4-kilometre circular route. The Circuit des Hauts de Blond is a 9-kilometre hiking route, with a stated walking time of 2 hours and 30 minutes. The two routes therefore differ both in their stated distance and in that a walking time is given only for the Circuit des Hauts de Blond. This trail starts at the car park on Place de l'Église. Before setting out, check local parking options, trail signage and conditions.
The marked hiking trails in Blond are classified under the departmental hiking programme, PDIPR. The municipality provides downloadable topoguides for local circular walks; check whether the documents are available before planning. For longer hikes in the surrounding area, the GRP des Monts de Blond is another guide: it comprises five stages and a total of 115 kilometres of marked trails. Check the information and trail conditions again before setting out.
Horse Riding and Choosing Your Stay
The Centre Équestre des Hauts de Blond in Blond offers riding lessons, hacks and horse-riding treks. The treks last from one hour to a full day. This range offers a practical guide for planning your time, but does not indicate whether an activity is currently available. Contact the provider before travelling to ask about the options.
When choosing a place to stay, you could first consider whether you want to focus on local history, megaliths, hiking routes or horse-riding activities. The routes described vary in length and in the time information provided for each; the church and rock sites add specific cultural and historical points of interest to the landscape. This makes it possible to plan a visit to Blond around the interests that matter most to your trip.
