Saint-Priest-Sous-Aixe offers several specific starting points for planning a trip: forest and designated trails, the history of the mills, and a church with different phases of construction and furnishings. There is also a guided pony-riding option. This makes it possible to consider nature, trail characteristics and cultural heritage as distinct areas of interest.

Exploring the ForĂŞt des Loges

The ForĂŞt des Loges is designated as a ZNIEFF. The designation refers to a natural area of ecological, faunal and floral interest. A 180-hectare area is accessible to walkers; the forest also has trails for hiking, horse riding and mountain biking. The area figure and the three stated trail uses offer different points of reference for planning. You can consider a walk as well as a hike, horse riding or mountain biking.

Compare hiking trails by distance and difficulty

Two trails can be compared using specific details. The Sentier des Étangs is 3.5 kilometres long, easy, has 119 metres of elevation gain and is marked in green. The Parcours de santé du Coeur is 6 kilometres long, rated moderate, has 192 metres of elevation gain and carries a red heart marker. The second route is therefore 2.5 kilometres longer and has 73 metres more elevation gain; the difficulty ratings also differ: easy for the Sentier des Étangs, moderate for the Parcours. If you prefer a shorter route rated easy, the Sentier des Étangs is the suitable option for comparison; for more distance and a moderate difficulty level, consider the Parcours.

Another route, the “Balade en forêt d’Aixe – Les Loges,” follows an old Roman road that is now used as a forest track. This route brings together a historic origin and the track’s present-day use as a forest road. This gives the route a distinct connection to the history of the landscape, while the two trails described above can be compared mainly by length, elevation gain, difficulty and markings.

Mills and church: different periods

Records document traces of a grain mill with seven pairs of millstones at the Moulins du Daumail, dating from the 13th century. In 1840, the mills were converted into so-called stone or pebble mills; they supplied the porcelain industry with processed kaolin slurry and enamel. These details represent different periods in the mills’ history: first, the documented grain mill, and later its conversion and the supply of the porcelain industry.

The church of Saint-Priest-sous-Aixe also reveals several periods. It is a Romanesque building that was rebuilt in the Gothic period. The church contains a 17th-century altarpiece that was altered in the 19th century; it also houses a Romanesque granite holy-water font. The building’s history and furnishings can be distinguished chronologically: the rebuilding belongs to the Gothic period, the altarpiece has its own later date, and the holy-water font is described as Romanesque.

Guided pony rides

Haras de Violette offers guided pony rides for children aged two and older. Take the age requirement into account when planning, and confirm availability before your trip before making the pony ride a fixed part of your itinerary.
