Ambazac can be explored through its cultural history and outdoor activities. Its varied attractions include historic buildings, trails through forests and around ponds, and Espace Izis at the Museum of Mineralogy and Petrography. If you’re looking for hotels in Ambazac, these highlights can help you plan: you could shape your stay around architecture, a walking trail or an event. The places below show just how varied the options are.

Forest, Pond and Trails

At the foot of Mont Gerbassou, the Ambazac municipal forest covers around 60 hectares and offers space for recreation and leisure. Étang de Jonas lies on the edge of the municipality, covers more than 20 hectares and affords an impressive view of the Monts d’Ambazac. A walking trail circles the pond. The forest and the water offer different experiences: the municipal forest stands out for its size and recreational use, while Étang de Jonas is known for its panorama and circular trail.

The available routes also differ in location and theme. The 35-hectare Domaine de Muret is a former agricultural estate that has been converted into a leisure and accommodation centre. The orienteering options in Ambazac comprise three loops: on the Muret estate, in the town centre and around Étang de Jonas. Check the latest maps and trail signs before setting out.

Festi’zac is a two-day contemporary music festival held around mid-September at the Muret estate in Ambazac. Check the latest dates if you’d like to plan your stay around the event. Another idea for an outing is the Circuit touristique – Anecdotes d’autrefois: this loop of around six kilometres introduces Limousin traditions and anecdotes from Ambazac; a four-kilometre loop is also available. The trail is available throughout 2026. Even so, check the latest route information before setting out.

The Sentier du dolmen, part of the Base Uni’Vert Trail des Monts d’Ambazac, follows a loop to the Dolmen de la Lieue, then through the forest and on to the more open landscapes around Puy Bertrand. The dolmen destination and the transition between woodland and open terrain shape the route.

Architectural History and Culture

The Church of Saint-Antoine has foundations dating to the 12th century and was almost entirely rebuilt towards the end of the 15th century, after the Hundred Years’ War. Inside the church is the Saint-Macaire reliquary casket, dating from the late 12th century. Made of engraved copper and champlevé enamel, it is one of the largest surviving reliquaries of its time in France. The church and reliquary casket thus represent different chapters in Ambazac’s architectural and artistic history.

The Grange aux Moines is listed in the Supplementary Inventory of Historic Monuments and is the only surviving remnant of the 12th-century Grandmont Abbey. Today, the building hosts concerts, exhibitions and conferences. Check the programme and access arrangements before visiting.

Espace Izis at the Museum of Mineralogy and Petrography in Ambazac is dedicated to Izis, a leading figure in humanist photography and a reporter for Paris Match; it also features a reconstruction of his photo lab. The journey to Espace Izis is listed as taking around 15 minutes from Limoges and seven minutes from exit 26 of the A20 near La Crouzille. These journey times are approximate.
