The themes range from historic streetscapes and archaeological collections to coastal coves and landscapes. Consider which of these aspects matters most to your stay; the places below each offer a different focus.

Chania: Harbour, Old Town and Archaeology

Chania’s Old Town brings together Venetian mansions, old hammams, minarets and churches in its historic streets. These different types of buildings give travellers interested in culture a variety of perspectives on the cityscape. The Venetian Harbour was built in the 14th century for trade and also to protect against pirate raids. Its origins therefore combine an economic purpose with protection.

The Municipal Market of Chania is a landmark for both locals and visitors, located in the city centre. The permanent exhibition at the Archaeological Museum of Chania offers another archaeological perspective: it comprises three galleries on the ground floor and one on the upper floor. It presents archaeological finds from the regional unit of Chania spanning several centuries. Unlike a single archaeological site, the collection thus covers a range of different centuries.

Theriso: History and Gorge

Theriso has its own historical focus. During the 1905 Revolution, the historic village served as the seat of the Cretan insurgents under Eleftherios Venizelos. The Historical and Folklore Museum of Theriso is housed in the former headquarters of Venizelos and the Theriso movement of 1905. The village’s history and the museum’s location thus point to the same historical context.

The landscape is also closely linked to the village: the Eleftherios Venizelos Gorge leads to the historic village of Theriso. The gorge is six kilometres long in total. Visitors interested in Theriso will find two different starting points for planning their trip here: the historical context of the revolution and the gorge as a natural landscape.

Akrotiri: Coast and Nature

Coast and nature take centre stage on Akrotiri. The area has small coves and beaches suited to relaxation and tourism. Nature in the northern hills remains largely undisturbed by human activity. The landscape is home to rich, partly endemic flora, as well as land and sea caves with endemic invertebrates.

These two sides of Akrotiri appeal to different interests: the coves and beaches offer seaside relaxation, while the flora and caves provide a glimpse of nature and its distinctive habitats. If you want to plan your stay around a particular theme, consider whether you would rather focus on coastal landscapes or nature observation.

Archaeological Finds and Travel

At the acropolis of Falassarna, mainly Archaic finds were excavated from the central area of the ancient Temple of Demeter. This is a different archaeological focus from the permanent exhibition in Chania: here, the focus is on a specific excavation area and its period; there, on a collection of finds spanning several centuries. For planning your trip, this comparison can help you decide whether you are more interested in a specific archaeological site or a collection covering a broader period.

Chania Airport has flights to Athens International Airport. Flight connections and schedules may change, so check the latest information before planning your trip.
