Emprosneros – Village History at the Foot of the White Mountains
Accommodation in Emprosneros
Location and setting
Emprosneros, also known as Embrósneros or Bronieros, lies at an altitude of 241 metres at the foot of the White Mountains and near the municipal boundaries of Apokoronas and Sfakia. The elevation, mountain setting, and proximity to the municipal boundaries describe different aspects of its location. This makes it possible to place the village geographically in terms of both its elevation and its position at the foot of the mountains. The municipal boundaries add a regional point of reference to this description.
Churches and cave church
The churches of Emprosneros include those dedicated to Agios Titos, Panagia, Agia Anna, Agia Triada, Agios Nektarios, Agia Aikaterini, and Prophet Elias. These individual dedications provide specific religious points of reference and identify the churches more precisely than a general description of the cultural heritage. Another church, Agios Antonios, is located in one of the village’s two caves. Here, two different types of local information complement each other: the dedications of several churches and the specific cave location of Agios Antonios. The variety is evident both in the names and in the location of a church inside a cave.
A historical date and a tower
One historical reference is the year 1822, when the “Provisional Administration of Crete” was established in Emprosneros. The year links the village to a named administration and gives this part of its history a specific date. The Alidakis Tower offers a different historical perspective. It was rebuilt as a Venetian building and used by Ibrahim Alidakis as a residence. The tower’s construction history and use can be distinguished: the first detail concerns the building, while the second concerns its use as a residence. Thus, a precisely dated event and the history of a specific building stand alongside each other as two distinct historical aspects.
Venetian buildings
The stone Venetian well near Kremastos adds to the Venetian associations of the Alidakis Tower. The two different types of building can be compared: a rebuilt tower with a stated residential use, and a stone well identified by the place name Kremastos. This comparison helps distinguish their shared Venetian association from the different buildings and location references. For the tower, its construction history and use by Ibrahim Alidakis are relevant; for the well, Kremastos is the specific point of reference.
Kremastos and the open-air theatre
The open-air theatre is one of the sights along the route from Kremastos to the village centre within Emprosneros. It is therefore associated with a route through the village. Its location is described differently from that of the well near Kremastos: the well is near Kremastos, while the theatre is named as a sight along the route to the centre. This distinction can help with orientation by differentiating between a named location and a route within the village.
For a sense of the geography, the information can be read at different scales. The White Mountains and the municipal boundaries of Apokoronas and Sfakia describe the village’s location in its wider surroundings; Kremastos and the route to the village centre refer to points within Emprosneros. This places the regional setting and orientation within the village side by side, addressing different questions about the destination’s location.
