Discover Almyrida
Accommodation in Almyrida
Almyrida offers several points of interest to consider when planning your trip: a beach, water sports opportunities and archaeological remains from different periods. There is also a view across Souda Bay towards Cape Akrotiri. If you are looking for hotels in Almyrida, first consider which aspects of the village matter most for your stay: time by the water, activities or history.
Beach, water sports and views
The water at Almyrida beach is clean and calm. It is also shallow, making it suitable for families with children. Conditions may vary. These features can help you assess the beach, while windsurfing, canoeing and diving are separate activities available in the village. Visitors can enjoy these water sports in Almyrida. If you plan to take part in one of them, check current availability with local providers.
The view also offers a specific connection to the surrounding area: from Almyrida, Cape Akrotiri can be seen across Souda Bay. The beach, water sports and views appeal to different interests that you can weigh when making your travel decision. The location is clear: the water sports take place in Almyrida, and the view described extends across the bay towards the cape.
Archaeological remains in Almyrida
Among the surviving traces of earlier history are the ruins of a Greco-Roman city on Foinikia Hill, northwest of the church in Almyrida. Another archaeological site lies on the western edge of the village, on the road to Kalives: the ruins of an early Christian basilica dating from the 6th century, with mosaic floors, were discovered there and excavated by the Ephorate of Byzantine Antiquities.
The basilica had three naves. The term refers to a division into three aisles; together with the mosaic floors, this feature brings the building to life. The city on Foinikia and the basilica belong to different historical periods. Anyone interested in Almyrida’s past can therefore consider these remains separately, rather than viewing them as a single complex. Their locations are also described differently: the city on the hill is northwest of the church, while the basilica is on the western edge of the village, on the road to Kalives.
Historical development and trip planning
The battles of Almyrida also have a place in history: they took place from 30 June to 4 July 1896 and were connected with the 1895–1896 revolution and the liberation of Apokoronas and Crete. These events belong to a different historical period from the archaeological remains. Together, they offer different points of reference for understanding the village’s history.
Tourism began to develop in the 1980s. Within a few years, Almyrida had become a popular holiday destination for many Greek and international visitors. This historical development is distinct from planning a trip today. First choose the focus of your trip, then compare specific options.
