Meskla: Keritis, Sarakina Gorge and Cultural Heritage
Accommodation in Meskla
Meskla lies on a plateau 200 m above the Keritis River, 21 km southwest of Chania. Its elevation and connection to the river give the village a distinct place in the landscape. The Sarakina Gorge and historic buildings are also nearby. If you are looking for hotels for a trip to Meskla, these different themes offer a concrete starting point for exploring the destination according to your interests.
Plateau and springs
The springs lie south of Meskla. The sources of the Keritis River are hidden among rocks and beneath evergreen plane trees. Two features offer a first impression of the landscape: the village’s elevated plateau and the hidden setting of the Keritis springs among rocks and plane trees.
Sarakina Gorge: Rock and hiking trail
Sarakina Gorge is also hidden in the landscape around Meskla and is difficult to find. Over hundreds, possibly thousands, of years, water has shaped the gorge’s compact limestone rocks into a narrow passage. It is 1 to 2 m wide, 10 to 15 m long and more than 10 m high. Its height is therefore more than five times its maximum width—an illustrative comparison that conveys the passage’s slender form. The hiking trail through the gorge includes carefully constructed wooden structures on steep sections. Steps make walking easier, and there are small metal footbridges at some of the more difficult points. If you are planning a hike through Sarakina Gorge, check the current condition of the trail in advance.
Historic buildings in Meskla
The area around Meskla contains Cyclopean walls, houses carved into the rock and ruins of a fortress dating from Classical Antiquity. These three structures raise different questions: the walls draw attention to the masonry, the houses to the work carved into the rock, and the fortress to its function as a fortification. At the end of Meskla, the Church of the Dormition of the Virgin stands in front of a larger, newer church with the same name. The two churches share the same dedication but differ in size and age. The Byzantine church of Sotiras Christ in Meskla contains frescoes by Theodoros and Michalis Venieris dating to 1403. Many of the frescoes are in poor condition. The fortress ruins and Sotiras Christ thus represent different historical periods: on one hand, traces of fortifications from Classical Antiquity; on the other, a Byzantine church with dated frescoes.
Find hotels to suit your travel interests
When looking for hotels for a trip to Meskla, you can first decide what interests you most: the landscape and geology, or architectural history and frescoes. Sarakina Gorge brings together geological features and a hiking trail, while the churches and fortress ruins represent historic architectural forms. This comparison offers a practical guide before you compare offers.
