Zourva is a small mountain village inland, in the municipality of Platanias. It sits on the mountain slopes; from anywhere in the village, the view stretches across the plain to the coast of Chania Prefecture. The village thus combines its mountain setting with a wide panorama. If you are choosing a destination based on scenery and hiking options, Zourva offers two distinct points of interest: the views from the village and trails that start in the village or nearby.

Village scenery and history

The village church of Agios Dimitrios provides a historical connection. It was built in Zourva after the end of the 1821 Revolution. This dating links the church to the history of the village and adds a specific historical aspect to the landscape views. Together with the trails through the surrounding area, it offers a picture of the village, mountain scenery and local history; the church and the destinations opposite the village can be distinguished geographically.

Tromarissa Spring lies opposite Zourva, among steep slopes and pine trees; the gorge of the same name begins there. The spring and gorge are close to the village, but not in its center. Here, the slopes, pines and start of the gorge take center stage, while the view from the village stretches across the plain to the coast. This lets you distinguish the sweeping views from the village from the landscape around the spring.

Hiking trails and destinations

Several hiking trails start in the heart of Zourva and lead to various places through a rugged natural landscape. The trails that start in the village are mapped. The Zourva–Tromarissa trail is part of the “Πράσινες Διαδρομές” (“Green Routes”) network. Starting in the village connects Zourva with various destinations in the surrounding area, including Tromarissa Gorge and, via another hiking trail, Vrisi Cave.

The Zourva–Tromarissa trail is well marked; the hike to the gorge takes about two hours. This is an approximate guide; trail conditions and water levels may vary. It is also important for your planning not to confuse the approach trail with the gorge itself: the hike leads to the gorge, whose technical sections require rope-rappelling skills. There are more than 40 technical rappels there; the highest is 30 meters. Other, shorter sections do not require a rope, but must be carefully downclimbed over the rock. This means the approximate hiking time to the gorge and the technical requirements inside the gorge itself are distinct.

Another hiking trail from Zourva leads to Vrisi Cave, about 10 km away. The routes can be described by different measures: an approximate hiking time is given for Tromarissa Gorge, while the approximate distance is the key measure for Vrisi. This distinction is useful when planning: the time given for the gorge and the distance to the cave describe different aspects of each hike.
