Falassarna – Beach and Ancient Phalasarna
Accommodation in Falassarna
Falassarna combines a beach with the archaeological site of ancient Phalasarna. For planning your trip, you can distinguish between several specific points of interest: the length of the beach, the well-known stretch of Pachia Ammos, the ancient port city, and windsurfing in certain wind and wave conditions. If you are looking for a hotel in Falassarna, this overview can help you first consider which themes you would like to shape your stay.
Beach and Pachia Ammos
The beach of Falassarna stretches for about three kilometers from one end to the other. Pachia Ammos is the best-known section: this wide sandy beach is about one kilometer long and includes Bourouni, Avoratias, and Gulisma. The two lengths refer to different scales: about three kilometers describes the beach as a whole, while about one kilometer refers to the Pachia Ammos section. This distinction helps separate the total length of the beach from the length of the named section.
Ancient Phalasarna
The archaeological site of ancient Phalasarna lies at the northern end of Falassarna beach. Its port was considered one of the most important ports in Crete. The Dorians founded Phalasarna around the 7th century BC at Cape Koutri on the Gramvousa Peninsula in the far west of Crete. In the 4th century BC, the “closed harbor” was carved out of a lagoon and surrounded by quays and defensive towers. The approximate date of the city’s founding and the later construction of the port belong to different historical periods; the port’s construction should therefore not be equated with the founding of the city.
An ancient temple of Demeter stood on the acropolis of Phalasarna, in a natural cave; this cave later collapsed. The port and temple highlight different aspects of the area’s history: the port complex is associated with the lagoon, quays, and defensive towers, while the temple is associated with its location on the acropolis and the natural cave.
Nature and windsurfing
Falassarna is part of the Natura 2000 network because of its diverse flora and fauna and its outstanding natural beauty. For nature enthusiasts, this is a distinct point of interest alongside the beach and ancient history. When there is stronger wind and successive waves, conditions at the beach are particularly suitable for windsurfing. If you are planning this activity, keep an eye on the wind and waves as you plan your trip.
Church and feast day
The church of Saint Fanourios is located at the port of Falassarna. Its feast is celebrated every year on August 27 with food and music. If you plan to attend the feast, check the event dates in advance.
For your trip planning, these are different points of reference: for the feast, you can plan around an annual date; for windsurfing, you can take wind and wave conditions into account as practical indicators. This means a calendar event and a condition-dependent activity can both feature in your plans.
