Sougia can be considered from different perspectives when planning a stay: beach, hiking, historic architecture and Cretan cuisine. Each calls for different considerations: at the beach, it is about how a particular section is used; on the trails, about distance, difficulty and walking time; and at Basilica A, about its design and mosaics.

Beach section east of Sougia

The eastern part of Sougia beach is undeveloped and preferred by naturists and nudists; nudity is not compulsory there. This description refers to this section, not necessarily to the entire beach. If you take this part into account when planning your beach visit, you can compare its preferred use with your own expectations without assuming that nudity is required.

Basilica A: design and mosaics

Basilica A lies at the western edge of the coastal settlement of Sougia. The three-aisled basilica dates from the mid-6th century AD; its narthex was as wide as the basilica. Three-aisled means that the church interior is divided into a central nave and two side aisles. The narthex is the entrance hall. The mosaic floors are preserved in the central nave and the narthex. Their motifs range from elaborate geometric patterns to depictions of deer and ivy, peacocks facing one another, and a vase with a stalk between them. The ornamental patterns and figurative motifs create different focal points.

Hiking: different route details

There are two differently described routes for getting active in Sougia. The almost 2 km circular route has only small changes in elevation, but is not rated as easy. The trail to Lissos starts right beside Sougia harbour and takes about 90 minutes each way. The walking time is an estimate; conditions may vary. The time given is for one way, not for the entire round trip, so take both sections of the route into account and check trail conditions before setting off. The details answer different questions: for the circular route, you get the distance and difficulty rating; for the trail to Lissos, the starting point and approximate walking time each way. So compare more than just the numbers and decide whether distance, difficulty or walking time matters most for your outing.

Cretan dishes with local fish and meat

A restaurant in Sougia serves traditional Cretan dishes made with local fish and meat; some of these dishes are hard to find elsewhere. Since the selection may change, it is advisable to check the current menu before visiting. If food is one of your criteria for a stay, this restaurant is a specific indication of traditional cuisine and local produce, not just a general description of Cretan food.
