Tsivaras lies at an altitude of 102 metres southeast of Kalives, on the main road to Vamos. Its history includes several recorded forms of its name, conflicts in the 19th century and the old school, which serves as a venue for the village’s active cultural association. The Livadouria nature trail offers another perspective: an announcement from 2015 described an organised hike through several villages. When planning a trip, visitors can therefore choose between different themes—local history and culture on the one hand, and a time-specific description of a hike on the other.

Location and recorded names

Kalives indicates the direction, while the main road to Vamos describes Tsivaras’s connection to the road network. The historical place names are also linked to specific dates: records refer to Tsivaras as Civara in 1577 and 1630, as Zivara in 1583, and as Tsivarás in the Egyptian census of 1834. These spellings therefore belong to different historical records, not to different places today.

The 1834 census recorded 16 Christian and 4 Muslim families. These figures count families, not individual residents. They therefore provide a picture of the population at the time by family and religious affiliation, but not a total number of people. Together with the earlier forms of the name, the figures give the village a historical context spanning several centuries.

Conflicts in the 19th century

Tsivaras stood on a fortified hill and was repeatedly the scene of fighting between Ottoman troops and rebels. According to tradition, the village was burned down seven times. This qualification is part of the account of the fires: the number is presented as a traditional account, not as an unqualified statement.

On 11 June 1878, Salih Pasha landed in Kalives with 4,000 men and attacked Tsivaras, Armeni and Nio Chorio. The landing and the attacks were distinct parts of the event: Kalives was the landing site, while the three villages were the targets of the attacks. During the Post-Political Revolution, Ottoman troops repeatedly attacked Tsivaras in May 1896 in an effort to break the rebels’ siege of Vamos. The episodes thus differed in context: in 1878, the landing near Kalives was linked to attacks on three villages, while in 1896 the focus was on an attempt to break the siege of Vamos.

The old school and the cultural association

The old school of Tsivaras was built in 1900 at the expense of Archimandrite Germanos Apostolakis. Many events organised by the village’s active cultural association take place there. The building thus combines a clearly dated part of local history with its role as a venue for the association. In understanding Tsivaras, the school’s construction history and the association’s activities are distinct but interconnected aspects: the year it was built points to the school’s origins, while its use reflects its cultural connection to the village.

The 2015 Livadouria nature trail

An announcement from 2015 described the third Livadouria nature trail as a six-kilometre organised hike through Tsivaras, Douliana and Gavalochori (Agios Pavlos). It started at the cave chapel of Agios Antonios in the grove of the same name in Tsivaras. The six kilometres refer to the route as described at the time; the place names and starting point provide further specific details about its course.

Media coverage in 2015 identified the section of the route through the gorge as part of the E4 hiking trail. This designation applies to that section, not to the route as a whole. If you are planning a hike today, check the current route and accessibility in advance. This lets you use the description from that time as a historical reference point without treating it as current route-planning information.

When choosing a destination, you can consider whether you are primarily interested in local history, the old school as a venue for the cultural association, or the former hiking route. The historical records tell of different periods, while the route provides a specific description of a trail dating to 2015. This distinction helps put Tsivaras’s attractions into context before you plan your stay.
