Impros in the Mountain Region

Impros is a small mountain village on the plateau of the same name, 780 m above sea level. It lies at the foot of the Lefka Ori and on the road from Askifou to Chora Sfakion. The plateau and elevation make the village’s mountain setting clear. When planning your trip, it is helpful to distinguish Impros itself from nearby destinations: the Imbros Gorge is close to the village, and a mountain road leads to Kaloi Lakki. Both destinations are associated with Impros, but have different routes and points of reference. If you are looking for a hotel for your stay, you can first consider Impros as a destination in the mountain region, then decide whether the nearby gorge or the mountain road should be part of your plans.

Memorial Sites in the Village

Two busts in Impros commemorate Georgios Xenoudakis. One stands on the school grounds next to his grave; the other is prominently placed in Agios Konstantinos Square. For travelers interested in local commemorative culture, this dual location is one of the village’s specific cultural features. Agios Konstantinos Square is also a point of reference for orientation: the mountain road to Kaloi Lakki begins beside the church. Thus, a memorial and the starting point of this route are in the same part of the village, while the bust on the school grounds marks a second, separate location.

The Imbros Gorge

The Imbros Gorge is close to Impros; its entrance is just beyond the village. The municipality describes the crossing as short and easy to walk. After a two-hour hike, you reach the exit in the village of Komitades. At several points, the rock walls reach a height of 300 m, while the gorge is only 2 m wide there. The combination of a narrow passage and high walls defines the character of these sections. Groups of trees, geological formations, and viewpoints complement the rock walls as other features of the gorge.

The reported lengths differ: the municipality gives the gorge’s length as 8 km, while a tourism source lists the route as 11 km. The two-hour hike to Komitades, in turn, describes a duration. Gorge length, route length, and hiking time therefore answer different planning questions. Comparing them makes it clear whether a figure refers to the landform, the path through the gorge, or the stated time to reach the exit.

Mountain Road to Kaloi Lakki

A good mountain road begins beside the Church of Agios Konstantinos in Impros and reaches the abandoned village of Kaloi Lakki after 10 km. This route should be distinguished from the hike through the Imbros Gorge: the mountain road leads to Kaloi Lakki, while the hike ends in Komitades. The starting points also differ—the church for the mountain road, and the gorge entrance just beyond the village for the hike. Their routes and destinations make it easy to tell the two apart. The 10 km refers to the mountain road, not the gorge.
