Sternes on Akrotiri: Village Center and Old Churches
Accommodation in Sternes
Sternes on the Akrotiri Peninsula is a destination for travelers interested in a preserved old village center and historic religious buildings. The village is one of the characteristic medieval settlements on Akrotiri. Its old settlement center has been preserved, and many of the village’s old churches have been mentioned in censuses since the early 17th century. Two perspectives are useful for understanding the area: the village center as a whole and individual religious buildings with specific historical details.
Village Center and Old Churches
The ruins of the old Church of All Saints date back to a church built in 963 AD under Nikephoros Phokas. It was single-naved and had a dome; it had no narthex (vestibule) or side chapels. This makes it possible to understand the architecture beyond its age: the construction date is accompanied by details about its basic form and the features it lacked.
The early mention of many old churches and the precise construction date of the Church of All Saints provide different historical reference points: one concerns a group of places of worship, the other a single building. This makes it possible to distinguish the general history of the village’s churches from the construction history of a specific church.
Individual Buildings in the Village Center
East of the old village center stands a preserved, two-story tower-like building. Beside it is the medieval Chapel of the Holy Spirit. Their proximity brings together two clearly distinct architectural forms: a tower-like building and a chapel. When viewing the village’s landscape from a cultural-historical perspective, you can consider both the buildings’ form and their position relative to each other.
Sternes also has a folklore museum. If you are planning a visit, check in advance whether the museum is open to visitors.
A Chapel Nearby
South of Sternes on Akrotiri, nearby, is the small cave chapel of the Holy Cross. It is located beneath a large rock on a vegetated mountain slope with scenic views. Here, the rock and slope shape its setting more than the preserved settlement center and the buildings in the village. The chapel is therefore a distinct example of religious architecture in the area around Sternes.
Additional Cultural Context: Chania
Chania itself offers a distinct urban cultural context. The Old Town includes Venetian mansions, old hammams, minarets, and churches in its historic lanes. The Venetian Harbor was built in the 14th century for trade and to protect against pirate attacks. The Archaeological Museum of Chania presents archaeological finds from the regional unit of Chania dating back several centuries. Its permanent exhibition comprises three rooms on the ground floor and one room on the upper floor. These urban buildings and the museum exhibition belong to Chania; Sternes, by contrast, is characterized by its preserved old settlement center and the religious buildings there.
