Fournés lies at the foot of the White Mountains and offers several ways to plan your trip: churches, festival dates and Cretan cuisine. When choosing a hotel, you can consider whether you would like to focus your stay on nature and views, architecture, a particular festival or regional dishes. These interests offer different points of focus; permanent features of the area can be distinguished from festivals tied to specific dates.

Landscape and Plane Trees

Tall plane trees grow along the route through Fournés; among them is Crete’s only evergreen plane tree. The mountain setting and the plane tree represent different scales: the White Mountains provide the landscape backdrop, while the tree is a single, distinct natural feature. If nature is a priority when choosing your destination, you can consider the broader landscape and the distinctive plane tree as two separate points of interest.

Church and Architectural Design

Fournés is home to the two-aisled Church of the Transfiguration of the Savior and Saint Panteleimon. It is also considered the only church with three domes. “Two-aisled” describes the division of the church interior into two aisles; the domes are a separate architectural feature. For architecture enthusiasts, the floor plan and number of domes are therefore two distinct aspects of the same building.

Koutsoulos and Festival Dates

The chapel of Saint Constantine stands on the summit of Koutsoulos, which is known for its views. A religious building and a landscape feature thus come together in the same place. The church in Fournés celebrates its feast day on July 26 with a large village festival. On May 21, the village’s young people hold an annual outing and a large celebration at Koutsoulos. The church feast day and the annual outing differ in both location and occasion. If you would like to plan your trip around one of these festivals, check the event dates in advance.

Local Cuisine and Products

Visitors can enjoy Cretan dishes prepared with local ingredients at the tavernas and cafés in Fournés. They can also buy products made by members of the cultural association. These offer two distinct interests for your stay: when dining, the focus is on the dishes and their ingredients; when shopping, it is on products made by the association’s members. Cretan cuisine and cultural products can thus be seen as separate aspects of the area.

Distances for Orientation

Fournés is 2 km from Alikianos and 15 km from Chania. Alikianos is therefore the closer point of reference, while Chania is farther away. The two distances offer different reference points for regional trip planning; you can also choose Fournés as your destination based on its local attractions.
