Gerolakkos: A Little Church, History and Green Surroundings
Accommodation in Gerolakkos
Gerolakkos has a clearly identifiable local focus: the two-aisled little church of Agios Nikolaos o Dikastis and its history. The area’s green character is another feature. If you are looking for a hotel, these aspects can provide a concrete starting point. At the same time, it is worth distinguishing the local perspective from the wider historical and landscape themes in the broader destination of Chania.
The Little Church and Local Tradition
The little church of Agios Nikolaos o Dikastis was built alongside a watermill wheel in the early 16th century, when Crete was under Venetian rule. The mill is located near the church. About a century after it was built, a second nave was added and dedicated to Saint Panteleimon. The original construction and the later addition can therefore be understood as two distinct stages in the building’s history.
The church’s religious significance is also reflected in a local observance: on December 6, it celebrates the feast of Saint Nicholas. After the vespers service on the eve of the feast, keramianian wine and sweets are offered to the faithful. For centuries, people from all over Crete have come to the two-aisled church to swear before the saint’s icon. A 2022 account describes this tradition as continuing today.
The Green Surroundings of Gerolakkos
Gerolakkos is a green area. This gives you two distinct local themes to consider: the church’s history and religious tradition, and the area’s green character. When choosing a hotel, you can decide which of these aspects matters most for your stay.
Chania as the Broader Context
In the broader destination of Chania, the Archaeological Museum offers a distinct focus on cultural history. Its permanent exhibition occupies three ground-floor galleries and one upstairs, presenting archaeological evidence from the regional unit of Chania spanning several centuries. In the historic village of Theriso, the headquarters of the Cretan rebels under Eleftherios Venizelos were located in 1905. The Historical and Folklore Museum of Theriso is housed in the former headquarters building of Venizelos and the Theriso movement of 1905.
The wider Chania context is also shaped by its landscapes and other historic sites. The Eleftherios Venizelos Gorge, through which you reach the historic village of Theriso, is 6 km long in total. Akrotiri has small coves and beaches suitable for recreation and tourism. In Akrotiri’s northern hilly area, nature remains largely undisturbed by human activity; the landscape has rich, partly endemic flora, as well as land and sea caves with endemic invertebrates.
At the acropolis of Falassarna, mainly Archaic finds were uncovered in the central area of the ancient Temple of Demeter. The old town of Chania includes Venetian mansions, old hammams, minarets and churches in its historic lanes. The Venetian Harbour of Chania was built in the 14th century for trade and protection against pirate raids. The Δημοτική αγορά of Chania is a landmark for both locals and visitors.
