Poznań: History, Culture and Experiences

At the Old Market Square, the city’s history meets a lively tradition. The square has been regarded as the vibrant heart of Poznań since 1253. The Town Hall is a Renaissance building dating from the 16th century. The famous goats appear on its tower every day at noon and 3 p.m., and butt heads twelve times. If you want to catch this spectacle, plan your visit to the square for one of those two times.

History and Culture

The Genius loci Archaeological Reserve contains well-preserved structures from the ramparts of the Poznań castle dating back to the 10th century. The crypts of Poznań Cathedral contain tombs believed to belong to Mieszko I and King Bolesław Chrobry. The Archdiocesan Museum is located on Ostrów Tumski in the former Lubrański Academy. Archbishop Florian Stablewski founded it in 1898; it is the oldest museum institution in Poznań.

Porta Posnania focuses on the history of Cathedral Island, the development of Poznań and the beginnings of the Polish state. As Poland’s first heritage interpretation centre, it uses modern technologies to present these topics. Another historical trail leads to the Enigma Cipher Centre: the story of deciphering the Enigma code began in Poznań, and the exhibition consists of three main sections.

Green Spaces, Water and Local Specialities

Poznań Palm House is located in Wilson Park and is one of the largest facilities of its kind in Europe. It houses 17,000 plants from 700 species and subspecies. These figures give a sense of the collection’s scale, while its location in the park gives it a distinct connection to the area.

The Malta Thermal Baths comprise four areas: Waterpark, Sports Pools, Sauna World and SPA 1306. Some pools are supplied with geothermal water drawn from a depth of 1,306 metres. A 2,190-metre regatta course is located on Lake Malta. According to tourist information, the Rogal świętomarciński, also known as St Martin’s Croissant, is a speciality that can only be sampled in Poznań.

Getting Around and Getting There

Poznań city centre is connected to Poznań-Ławica Airport by daytime bus routes 159 and 148 and night bus route 222; route 159 goes to the train station. Check the bus connections again before your trip.

The tourist information office at the Old Market Square provides free information material about Poznań and the surrounding area. The “The Oldest Poznań” audio guide starts in the square in front of the cathedral on Cathedral Island. It offers two routes: Cathedral Island–Śródka or Cathedral Island–Chwaliszewo.
